If Kadri and Backlund can peform at or close to what they did last year for the next 3 years, if Lindholm stays and Huberdeau bounces back this team is set up very nicley against the cap and if they can develop some talent not much in the next 2 years at least to worry about for the cap and resigning players.
Dube, I don't see having a year that gets him too much more than $4mil
Pelletier injury makes his next contract cheaper.
Kylington if he stays not sure he signs for a huge raise considering how much time he has taken off.
If any of Honzek, Coronato, Zary, Pelletier, Wolf performs higher than expected this team could be very good over the next 3 years. Lots were picking them to be a contender last year and it didn't happen but who would have guessed Huberdeau and Markstrom would have been that bad. Maybe Markstrom, but nobody was picking Huberdeau to get 56 points. #

We can do the same thing we did with Backlund, name Andersson as the captain in 3 years, when he signs his extension!

For those who are curious, Backlund will fall roughly 50 games short of Iginla's games played for the Flames record if he plays all 82 games for the next three season.

Currently Landeskog is the only other Swedish captain that I can think of.

Backlund wanted to leave 3 months ago. Conroy has made it clear that new management thinks it's important to have guys in Calgary that WANT to be in Calgary. Why attach the captaincy to a contract extension to seemingly appease a guy that didn't get the C right after Gio left, for whatever reason?

I think you might be making some assumptions on a few things.

Shoulda been two years ago for captaincy imo. Just had to get through Sutter's "look at me, I'm the captain now" era.

I would not be surprised that the AAV came in lower, because he is the captain.

I'm sure AAV was lower due to the letter. But, he was still under contract for another year. He expressed interest in leaving prior to contract expiration.

I am certain that all changed starting with the Award Ceremony, where the Flames made clear to Backlund exactly how much he means to the team and the city.
|
Bad take? Maybe. Just my opinion. I've had bosses I don't necessarily enjoy all the time but I don't threaten to leave the company because of it. I just feel like maybe his time here had run out and it was time for the changes and new culture this board has been preaching about for years.

The Daryl stuff is well documented and understandable. To me this seems like "I won't sign unless I get this and he's gone". If that's the case (I have no idea) can we agree it's juvenile behavior not seen outside of professional sports?
