That he's only at 74% in EV Defense is the worst of all.

Announce the extension, hold a press conference, let him put on that C baby!

I love this deal.

I assumed Backlund was a fancy stats darling....is that not the case?

Or is it more pick and choose the stats he is or is not good at?

Well I harped on the last deal and ate crow. I don't love the direction of this team, but I have to admit, Backlund is a rare bird when it comes to playing this well at that age.

I'd wager much of his chart was more a reflection of the team's lackluster performance last season

Backlund is a play/line driver who could still pass as a good second line C on most teams. As a 3rd C he's in elite company.

In comparison, a glowingly positive view on Backs:

I though analytics are supposed to remove that stuff though?

I mean, otherwise....what is their function?

I think JFresh is a Flames fan who remembers when Backlund flubbed a goal in the playoffs lol

Just the perfect length of a contract. Lots of debate on CP about how the Flames could lower the AAV by giving away term and I am so glad they stuck with shorter term, keeping flexibility.

To get Backlund to sign this I am sure he is getting tons of NMC protection which IMO is fine. If the next two seasons go to #### for the team, he'd probably want to be moved anyway.

Now hopefully he keeps father time at bay for three more seasons.

Rasta, he's the hero CP deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So we'll hunt him. Because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector. A dark knight.

Also lets him decide if he wants to chase a cup or games played lead with the Flames.

Really to me the flaw is in these all up single metric views that the analytics community wants to push more.

A lot of the underlying numbers in all of those cards make sense if you look at the individual components.

But then the all up single number is a mess because it all is based on how much weighting that person puts into each of those underlying numbers.

Their is a bit of a consistent story there in all those views though - Backlund is an elite play driver at 5v5, and an elite chance creator, but individually isn't the best finisher of chances, and his penalty differential and special teams impact isn't the best.
