I would still prefer to trade but if that is not possible, 2 years 4.5m is the best we could hope for.

That's actually tidy for both sides. There escape for Backs if things go sideways and the Flames don't have to wiggle out of anything horrible.

Lowe, McTavish, and Benning would certainly have something to say about that.
But as far as Flames former GMs go, he's likely the worst, and that's saying something.

Sad trombone for saying it was the best outcome?

The thing about a 2 year deal is that he would still have value at the deadline at the end of that contract.
though I also wouldn't be sad if the dude was a life-time Flame.

Bet he will get a full NMC as well, and if things arent looking rosy at the time, it will be up to him if he wants to leave during the season.

Which is totally okay given the rumoured term and value.

Yeah there must be a lot of control here otherwise he’s just taken a pay cut for no reason… works for me either way! Love Backlund.

Well, if things blow up then he likely won't be too picky on which competitive team he goes to

Solid deal for Backs! That puts him at fair value for a higher end 3rd liner with a two way game. Good for both sides if true. It's a little light honestly for the value Backlund brings, but UFA values for older players have been abysmal this off season.

Yeah probably not...IF he wants to uproot the family in the middle of a season and move XXXX miles away.
Not a slam dunk for anyone to do that has a say in things.

Backlund should absolutely have been traded. The lovefest with all these players who have won nothing with the Flames is funny. People treat Backlund similar to how Chicago would treat a player like Toews or Kane... Backlund has been a part of multiple cores that have barely made it past the first round.

No one is taking on trades or cap right now. He’s much more valuable to us than what he would be worth in a trade.

And been among the best Flame players in the playoffs on several of those teams.
