Ya, he's not going to give up scoring titles just to prevent a few goals.

I bet that despite all this talk, they're going to wind up being more offensive-minded with more TOI than ever before.
And then burn out in the playoffs (if they make it) like they always seem to.
They'll never sacrifice individual glory for the delayed gratification of putting the team first for a chance at success down the line. It isn't in their DNA.

I don't think it's a question of DNA. The organization will never allow them to sacrifice individual glory, because individual glory is the basis of their entire marketing effort. ‘See how much our two guys score! Oooo, shiny! Buy more tickets!’
Draisaitl, at least, shows occasional signs of knowing how to check, but only makes the effort in the playoffs. That, to me, says he's being coached to play the way he does.
McDavid, to go by his quotes, apparently thinks he's already good enough defensively. That may just be a case of ‘you can't fix stupid’.

Worst thing about hockey starting up is being exposed to that smug Woody prick and the SN circle McJerk everywhere again.

They can't play strong defensive hockey with the minutes they put up.
It's just not sustainable over a long season & playoffs and you'll see them get exposed on lazy backchecks once they're tired.
I don't think McDavid is incapable of 2 way play; but it's not going to happen with how they strategically overplay them.

Basically this.
Its the double-edged sword. If you want to play McDavid and Draisaitl 30 minutes a night, a good chunk of that will be coasting to rest.
If you want them to back-check, and they're both good skaters, but you'd have to cut their ice time by like 10 minutes a night.

Love how these chumps are being labelled serious contenders again. The Edmonton media just can’t help themselves. Both McDavid and Draisaitl are far too selfish to put the team ahead of their own personal stat lines, and when the games are on the line they both fold. Look at Draisaitl in the final Vegas game. Almost single handed lay ended the Oilers season. This is just absolutely hilarious to watch the self felating, unbelievable.

Seeing the team implode defensively in the back half of that Vegas series was delightful.
When it dawned on them that they didn't have the backchecking to handle vegas' forechecking 5 on 5 they just phoned it in and cried for powerplays because it was their only play at that point.
Oilers are only built for the first round against middling opponents. Definitely not the league's upper echelon teams though.
But they can go ahead and ignore the last two convincing defeats to COL and VGK and keep spinning a hopeless narrative.

He averaged 22:23 per night last season.
His ice time is on the rise. And let's not pretend he hasn't had some outlandish nights for TOI where he didn't leave the ice in extended PPs or OTs

Looking at averages includes games where they didn't need to overplay McDavid. IN games that were tight, his ice time increased. To detrminental effect, especially in the POs.

This is clearly evidence of the incredible tactical minds on Edmonton's coaching staff. What daring strategies will they think of next?

What's with the obsession with minutes played?
Lots of top players have played big minutes over the years.
Just look at Iginla's minutes through his peak:
22:21
21:25
21:18
21:41
22:03
21:26
21:36
He played 23:18 during his Cup run.

The Flames were not known for showing up in the playoffs.
It's a lot of hockey. If the Flames had the luxery of controlling Kippersoff and Iginla's minutes they would have been a different team come spring.

Because its clear that the Oilers would be a better team overall if the Oilers top players played less minutes (ie cut out the minutes that they float and are useless).
However they are built so poorly that they don't have anyone else to be effective in those minutes.
Either way, the Oilers roster is worse this season than it started off last season, and will likely struggle to make the playoffs.
