There is no way am individual bot account is making that much. Many bots are not seeking profit at all ("like" farming, political interference, etc.) and the ones that are trying to make money by spamming make a miniscule amount of money each, multiplied by a huge number of bots. Charging $5/month would immediately remove the majority of bots. The bots need to go for Twitter to become tolerable. I, for one, welcome the radical change of charging for every account.
Do I think it will make twitter profitable? No. Of course not. But I always love watching a radical direction change.

It's not even the 'driving people away' part that's stupid, how do you get my 16 and 17 years olds to sign up for an account they dont need and has no appreciable value to them if its not free? the only model that can work for social media is free because the product you are offering is wholly worthless

I can't say for sure because I'm not on Twitter. My guess is that some of that some of those accounts belong to real people who just behave like bots and the rest are indeed paying because they get some value out of it, even if it's not direct monetary value. There are still has to be millions of bots without a blue checkmark.
