I don't know. I think the OP is still pretty solidly on point: MacKenzie Weeger is a really good player.

Not too shabby!
Huge hits, huge plays, huge value.
Great player, great trade.

I continue to think that both teams did well in the trade. I originally thought Florida gave up too much, but after the season Tkachuk had it looks more even. We will see how things look when Huberdeau is playing like he can.

Agreed. Huberdeau is likely going to see a really big resurgence this season to an 80-90 point player, imo. The stifling, crappy system is gone, and there's younger, faster players available for Hubs to play with.
And Weegar is an incredible D-man already, who will likely also see a bump in offense. Tkachuk is the best player in the deal by a country mile, he's a true superstar in the NHL now. But, we were losing that superstar regardless, so you can't look at as if the Flames just randomly decided to move Tkachuck in an attempt to win a trade and get better without him.

I think this year, Tkachuk falls back a bit, and wont go over 100 pts for a bit. Florida has lost a few players this summer that might put them back for a while.
My opinion.

I mostly agree. I could also see him get to a slower start because of all the playoff injuries last season.
The lack of Huberdeau is also evident in Barkov's production. He went from 39G to 23G this season, all while scoring 10 less points in one more game.

As it stands now it's a landslide win for Florida. Tkachuks value has never been higher and Huberdeaus value has never been lower. Huberdeau should have an improved season and can Tkachuk really get better? I want to say no but Tkachuk has surprised multiple times in his career. My gut says his production drops but at the same time I think don't doubt him. It will be interesting to see how things play out for both of them this year.

So based on what you're saying we will declare a winner annually for the trade based on how the seasons go?
So if Tkachuk sees a drop in points it's because he can't get better and after a record setting 115 point season and being neutered the next season Huberdeau having a bounce back won't change much since it's just to be expected?

Winning is always super fun, but an added bonus here is to see a handful of snivelling, whiney posters take their sad violins with them back into the woodwork from whence they emerged.

Did Barkov play with Huberdeau? I thought they were often on different lines/

Always find it odd "fans" hate everything about the organization they never do anything right and cheer on former players who are bums as Flames but not are Superstars on another team and now everyone that was a star on another team is washed up bums.

They've only played one year. What else do I have to go by? You just made a bunch of assumptions. I said as it stands now it's a landslide but could definitely be evened out depending how things play out moving forward.

You're right, often different lines, but the same PP, they also played together 4 on 4, and Huberdeau - Barkov - Duclair was a line for a bit.
Huberdeau was in on 25 of Barkov's even strength points, and 26 PP points. I'm not sure if that stat means directly involved or on the ice when the point is scored.

Tkachuk more than made up for Huberdeau's PP contributions. Barkov just had a bit of a bad season offensively. He was battling nagging injuries for a while (again).

I'm not trying to take away anything from Tkachuk's PP contributions. Barkov had 16 less goals last season. Huberdeau not setting him up played a part in that IMO. If it was all injury related, I guess we'll see Barkov get back to 30G this season.

Well we all thought the Flames won the trade by a landslide before the season opened last year. So it's even.

I think two seasons is fair to judge a major trade like this one. Allow the players either a struggling first season or crazy first season, and then check back at the conclusion of two years and see if any pieces regressed to the mean, came up to the mean or got even better.

Florida got a superstar young player who signed for 8 years for all of his prime years.
Calgary can never win this trade.
But Calgary was forced to trade this player. They were never going to win it.

If both players came on the market today the interest level and offers would be night and day.
It would be really interesting to know what other offers existed out there at the time though. Very curious what Carolina was offering. Very curious if St Louis was willing to offer a deal. Could the Flames have landed Kyrou+?

Weegar is our best defenseman and seems like a true leader. Excited for what he can do this season with a new vision behind the bench.
