When assessing value, you have to work under the assumption that it will age like 90% of contracts do.
Once again, don't get me wrong, it was 100% the right move to push all the chips in. When Gaudreau/Tkachuk announced their intentions to leave, that left the Flames with all the pieces required to win, but the star forwards. I do think in 4 yeas or so the Flames could be F-ed, which is fine, as a four year competing window is huge.
Treliving somehow managed to acquire new forwards plus bring in a top pairing d-man.
You could also add in Kadri to the deal to the Tkachuk/Huberdeau. The first from the Tkachuk deal was used to shed Monahan and use that cap space was used to acquire Kadri. It was a very tight cap market, for all competing teams, so that first was massive.

Sutter's game plan just looked great too. The defence and constant energy from seemed to absolutely exhaust and frustrate the Avs. The Flames offence just kept up pressure and took eventually capitalized off those opportunities. Weegar seemed to be a major part of that. He did everything Tanev did last year, but with more physical and offensive threat.
The Flames could have so easily collapsed early on in this game. The Flames gave up a goal early goal to the league champs and didn't score until late in the first. The coaching really shined. What a game.

You don't even need to look at the stats for Weeger. The way he played in pre-season and the first game just shows you how good he is as a D-man. Like what some professional commentators have said, the Flames won this trade hands down with getting both Weegar and Huberdeau and signing them to long term deal at pretty good prices. Weegar's contract is unbelievable when you compare him to someone like Nurse. There's absolutely no comparison! It's wizardry at work here!

I take back every bad thing I ever said about Treliving. The Tkachuk trade was an absolute fleecing like I've never seen before.

Huberdeau will put up over a ppg like he has for 4 seasons now . but weegar looks like a game changer . it was two A pieces for one plus a basket of goodies . I sure am glad there are impulsive gms like zito in the league

They did a good job containing him last night . If the team is going to win it all, they have to figure out how to defend McDavid and Mackinnon.

What is with your terrible takes? Have you ever seen Mackinnon play? Yes in fact he does get a ton of breakaways probably averages one a game or more...nobody defends these guys perfectly
McDavid was over PPG against the Avs in the playoffs and got swept. You contain them and win with your depth.

As crazy as it may sounds, I was more excited to watch MacKenzie Weegar than Huberdeau going into this season. After having watched a few Florida games, I thought Weegar stood out more and made more of an impact towards both ends of the ice. His skating and puck moving ability is obviously excellent as we would've expected, but I was shocked to see how physical he was for a finesse guy. I think I said in the summer that I would've been more comfortable re-signing Weegar than Huberdeau and after last night (albeit one game), I think I'm even more so convinced. He was fabulous out there, big fan.

I’m in bold prediction mode today.
I bet Weegs finishes the season at point per game pace.

<DEBBIE DOWNER>
That's because he's going to have a season-ending injury tonight, less than a minute into the game.
Two games played, two points. End of season.

Huh.
Barkov: 67 GP
Ekblad: 61 GP
Huberdeau: 80 GP - sets NHL assist record for LW playing with Sam Bennett.
Weegar: 80 GP - 23:22 ATOI, 44 points, +40
Florida should’ve traded Barkov and Ekblad - they would’ve returned a helluva lot more than Matthew Tkachuk.
