It's been pretty clear that the Flames plan for this season is
1. hope that prospects can crack the team and become impact players
2. hope that key players bounce back.
I am glad that they aren't trying to sign PTOs but I am also skeptical that we see different results from last season.

Had the flames kept eakin and Milano, despite not making the playoffs, we’d at least have had the most talked about hair in the league. Chia and the mullet.

Similar result with a much younger team is still better.
If we are worse, at least we will be sellers at the deadline and hopefully add some quality picks in next draft.

Poor seasons from Kadri, Huberdeau, Markstrom. PP was bad. OT/SO was bad.
Can easily see them being better than last season, probably much better. Still a pretty decent team.

Folks have been saying this all summer. I know that it is possible for the Flames to turn a corner and for things to line up right. But to me, I don't want to depend on the same roster that let you down the season before.
I would prefer a clear vision for what sustained success looks like.

The OT/SO thing could be the biggest factor. It wouldn't even take a considerable bounce back from Huberdeau and Markstrom to correct that record. Hard to believe, considering all the disappointments last season, that with even an average OT/SO record, the Flames would have been a 100 point team.

According to Capfriendly as of now, 16 teams have invited PTO players to their camps. The Flames are hardly an outlier.

I still think that Derek Stepan and Paul Stasny could be a decent PTO option for a lot of teams.
Parise, both Ritchies, and even Leivo might work as the 13th forward on most teams.

They will have to get a bunch of entry level salaries on the team if they hope to be able to sign any of their UFAs.

Hows that?
IF they dont make a single change to things this season, they will have $35+M
to sign whomever they choose next summer.
Obviously they cant bring em all back, nor do i think there is an appetite for that.
But to say they have to get "a bunch of entry level salaries" to bring 3 or 4 of them back is just hyperbole.
