Literally zero downside to having a couple guys around who can help fill the vet quota required in pre-season games.

What is the issue?

Probably that we end up giving roster spots to the PTOs who show up for a handful of games.

three pre-season games in two days (incl the split squad games) necessitates ~24-27 NHL veterans since you will not want to play your main roster guys in back-to-back nights early into training camp

How many PTO's have received NHL contracts from the Flames....ever?

3?

PTO guys are almost a requirement for most teams every year.

IF they happen to outplay other guys for the position....then what are you losing?

The veteran requirement is usually waived for the split squad games.

2017 - Tanner Glass
2019 - Tobias Rieder
2019 - Zac Rinaldo
2020 - Michael Stone
2021 - Michael Stone

Tanner Glass was awesome in the pre season. Exactly what that Flames team needed. I was happy they signed him. Then he fell off the cliff. Immediately.

Months of arguing whether the choice for 13th forward would make or break the Flames' season.

If a PTO comes to camp and steals a spot from one of your young players, then those young players are obviously not ready for prime time.

I want Max Comtois and Noah Gregor.

Any vets would be wise to PTO here. It's going to be wide open, you can't say it's that way on a lot of other teams. Conroy and Huska are pretty fair guys and your competition is inexperienced. If I'm a guy looking to extend my career I'd be looking at Calgary.

It's rumoured that the Pens, Leafs, and Wings may offer Tatar a PTO.

I used to think like that, but I've changed my perspective. Those vets know exactly what to do to impress enough in a camp because they've been there before many times, and they may be able to do it for a short period of time against other team's mix of vets and prospects, but it's not sustainable. Meanwhile, a prospect is unfamiliar with what's required to truly impress in camp, and may still be learning the pro game and look like they're not ready.

However. If you go to game 10 of the season, the prospect, if he's worth anything, has ramped up his game and has either caught up to the replacement level vet or has surpassed them, but because you filled that roster spot, you're more likely than not to see the vet play a bunch of games at a terrible level than ever see what the prospect could contribute.

I don't believe that Comtois or Gregor are better than any of the young guys we have on the verge of breaking in. If the prospects can't hack it, there are no shortage of veterans out there still waiting for a contract that you could sign mid season. The smarter thing to do now that there are a surplus of borderline NHLers is to wait until about game 20 to see what you have in the system. If the kid needs more seasoning, go out and sign a Brett Ritchie type if you have to, but don't do that unless it's a last resort.

You can still have them there as an incentive to be in shape for camp and show well there. Even if you have no intention of signing a guy he can still be useful.
