I was responding to someone who was calling people "garbage" if they support the NFL and not the CFL and explaining why that is.
If you enjoy it that's great. I don't. But I won't be someone that regularly comes into this thread to take a piss all over something people do enjoy.

I've stood by, mildly complaining while fans brushed aside any criticism of ticket prices/product and chose to focus solely on the game like it was thriving, while it was clearly faltering.
Then extra factors came into play like Covid and second tier leagues in the US and I knew the CFL was toast with it's aging fan base. They did next to nothing to bring in new/young fans, instead just relying on their 35-60 year old fans......ridiculous move, utterly absurd and directionless by this league over the past decade and a half. And it cost them the league we grew up loving.
|
Does that sound like I'm wishing it sucks? There's a ton of us that love this league and can't believe how far it has fallen under brutal leadership amongst tough conditions (covid being the worst). I've been watching since I was a kid in the 90's. And the response from most older fans is basically what you stated "just shut up if you don't like it and don't watch".
Well, enjoy what's coming, I guess. Without some serious overhaul, it's on it's way out. And most of us are really sad about that and wish there was discussion and a path to trying to save it.
BTW, I've been to two games this year and will be there tomorrow. How many games have you been to this year?

What a strange thing to say....particularly because it was a great game.

They'd need some serious walk up to have an even decent crowd. And walk up isn't a thing like it used to be due to technology making ticket buying so easy. Combine that with a crappy looking day and I'd say we'll have 22-24k.
|
I thought this was a bit of an overstatement when I first read it. Some of the 'sections' (I assume you were dividing, say, section T into lower and upper to get your count? I think a few of those sections were actually sold out, not 'not for sale'.
Danny Austin has reported that sales sound like they are over 28k.

You are correct in saying that sales won't move much from that, given that the weather isn't perfect, and as you said 'walk up' ticket sales are pretty much a thing of the past.

28000 in a stadium that routinely sold 33-35000 for Labour Day is a disaster. That start time is looking more like a larger culprit. Also the first ####ty weather LD game in a long time as well.

28000 is actually really good. I'd say the problem now will be season ticket holders buts in seats with the high down to 12 degrees today.

I understand your frustration.
It isn't easy to take a journalist seriously when they openly cheer for the rival of the team you're covering. It's a hit to the credibility. He brings up being from Edmonton a lot.
But that's not even it. I don't think he's very good, regardless of his coverage of the Flames or Stampeders. The team at 3Down Nation does a better job at covering the Stamps. It feels balanced, unique and well-researched.
As for his work covering the Flames, it's painful, and he often tries to make it about him.
And if that's a video essay.... give Stephen Brunt a call to find out what a real video essay is.

Not to mention the air quality index is 10+ today. Relative to what we normally get, it’s a pretty miserable day for football, sadly.
Mother Nature obviously prefers the NFL…

Just got this note from the Stampeders. In addition to saying nothing useful, they somehow got the game start time wrong at the top of the email:
Quote:
UPDATE ON TODAY'S GAME
STAMPS VS ELKS - MONDAY, SEPT. 4 @ 2PM
Dear Fan
The health and safety of our players, staff, and fans are of the utmost importance to us. The Stampeders and the CFL continue to closely monitor the air quality conditions in the area as it pertains to today's Labour Day Classic game at McMahon Stadium against the Elks.
Kickoff of the Labour Day classic remains set for 5:00pm with the Gridiron Gardens (presented by Coors Light) opening at 3:00pm on McMahon Stadium's South Practice Field.
Further updates will be provided through our social media channels if required. We look forward to seeing you at McMahon Stadium at 5:00pm.

Nice to see that the league had the guts to suspend that absolute dip#### one game for one of the most dangerous and idiotic cheap shots of the year, maybe the last few years

Yeah, Salim can eff off back to Edmonton anytime and he can take Dustin Nielson with him. Seriously, is Edmonton the only city in this country where we can find sports reporters and announcers??

Are u referring to the headbutt?
That seems a tad dramatic.
It was dumb and completely outta bounds, but to call it the most dangerous hit in the past few years? Come on.
Garrett Marino cornered the market on that last year in only what, 6 games? And if course he was a Rider lol.

Look man I can't keep up with all the dirty players and hits the Riders do, I agree, Marino as a player was worse, a total ####ing clown.
But Zach, arguably the leagues MOP with a concussion history, was head butted by this clown. What if he goes down and suffers another major concussion? For what? It's totally unacceptable.

Why wouldn’t you take the safety instead of kicking from your end zone?
