Don't think it was teams learning to defend the plays, its easy to defend a team who is willing to just shoot without a pass being made right into the goalies crest. I believe the Flames led the league in the puck being frozen by the goalie off the first shot which is a telling sign.

I wonder if Huska was just relaying the coaches message, the shot is obviously important but just as important is the location, and how the shot is being created.

The league is too talented, the goalies are too good now to play a simpleton game.

If we leave aside the first line getting hot in 2022 and deviating from the Sutter game plan, it still explains to me the increase between last season and the one before in glorious scoring chances against for all the other despite the numbers generally favouring the Flames.

In short, I think that Jay is correct that a game plan against the Flames was developed by multiple teams.

While I hesitate to enter into the speculation of what-ifs pilled on top of what-ifs, I do wonder if the result for the Flames does not change if Gaudreau and Tkachuk return in place of Weegar, Huberdeau, and Kadri because the offensive game plan had been figured out.

That doesn't absolve the players last year nor am I trying to place all the blame on Sutter or the coaching staff. It's a tough league to win in because very intelligent people are paid a lot of money to figure out how to beat your team at any moment in time.

I just wonder if Huska has - rightly in my opinion - recognized that they were figured out offensively and the team needs new ideas.

What seemed different about 2021/22 was that the top line was not only doing their own thing but played together the whole season and had chemistry. Huderdeau, on the other hand, was constantly being shuffled around. No one seemed to know how to play with him.

It was also an issue of style. Gaudreau's game is based on puck possession and carrying the puck into the zone, so Sutter was probably okay with it, as long as he made an effort to back check. Huderdeau doesn't slow the game down and wants to quickly get to the net and make a play. His style of play also requires his wing mates to follow him towards the net. All very different than what Sutter's system required.

Big thing last year was shot location wasn't the issue for the Flames - they tended to get shots in dangerous areas at similar rates to the prior year.

Problem was the pre-shot movement. No cross-ice passes or royal road passes (Tkachuk and Gaudreau both great playmakers).

Since the focus was shot volume they weren't making that extra pass...hopefully we actually see the team focus more on making that extra pass this year even if it means overall volume comes down.

I can't believe how quiet it has been for the Flames this off season. I wonder if activity starts to ramp up as we flip over to September.

There was puck movement...it just wasn't very good and was very predictable. it seemed like the other teams all knew how to prevent the Flames from scoring. The other teams would collapse in tight. The Flames would move the puck around the outside for a while and then take a not so great shot. The other teams would always break through the Flames' defence and make great plays much closer around the net.

Maybe it was Sutter telling the team to take the easy shot, maybe it was the other teams having a book out on the Flames and knowing where to stand to stop them from getting any good shots...maybe a little bit of both?

Don Waddell was asked a couple of weeks ago about the lack of activity as the Canes were expected to make more moves in the offseason, and he said that he expects the activity to ramp up after the Labour Day long weekend.

My favorite part of this thread so far is the people who think the 5-1 flames in October 2022 were the real flames. And the next 76 games were all outlier events.

"My gf and I have a relationship that's really special. We had this amazing month together and it was so magical. Over the next 11 months, she cheated on me with 42 different people, but that wasn't real her. She was stressed cuz she had a bad boss that made her feel bad about herself. It was all her boss's fault. But now her boss has been fired. So, heading into our second year of our relationship, I can really feel the magic. We're such a great couple. She's a keeper." - Flame's optimist, probably.

My favorite part is when posters make up sh** about what is being said in the thread that isn't accurate at all.

Since when is being an optimist something that should be mocked.

I don't have an intelligent argument, so I will make up something stupid about people who disagree with me. Then I can call them stupid for what they 'probably' said. Then I'll look smart!

It really isn't and just more of junk he/she posts.

I don't know which players had their personal lives impacted because of Sutter being the coach.

But you come to expect it from a person who just asked how to properly use a racial slur in the Bill Peters topic.

The Flames are in a good spot as their team is full of good players that teams want. If Calgary does hit the reset button this season, they could get a significant return to do a rebuild or even re-tooling on the fly. Unfortunately, this off season there is just no money to go around, however, once the season chugs along by the trade deadline there will be more cap flexibility and Calgary will have better trade offers. I am happy that Calgary hasn't moved any of their UFAs. It's easier said than done but that's the direction I think the Flames should be looking at.
