How? Most teams total lack of cap space due to the non-rising cap the last few years.

No one wants to give up cheap players and/or prospects/draft picks for rentals they know they likely can't extend.

You can trade cap for cap type deals, but that's likely UFA's to be for UFA's to be, which helps no one.

Or you can trade Taylor Hall for nothing.

Calgary did well to trade Toffoli for a player with two years control and a useful draft pick.

His hat has the L and A in Calgary larger than the rest of the letters. I think that was something Toffoli had made last year.

Mangi needs to stop wearing clothes made by folks he knows or meets.

Conroy really should have just traded all his pending free agents before today even if the returns were no higher than 2nd round picks and prospects that aren't exciting. At least then, the trades would have been completed by now.

Is this part sarcasm? Because I agree with the premise, but if you think this is "doing well", then that's an extraordinarily low standard.

Exactly. It's not Conroys faullt the trade market is poor, but that doesn't make the current situation any better. The standards for what a successful off-season looks like really have dropped around here. Though that might be the only way to keep your sanity cheering for this organization.

No sarcasm.

When you look at the value right now for players making decent money, the Toffoli trade was one of the better ones.

Their were a numbers of teams interested in Shaggy, he had value.

The markets is the market.

Unless you think that Conroy should simply walk these players to UFA, he needs to play in, and be judged in, this existing market.

How is they better than waiting for appropriate value later in the season?

I'd prefer Conroy walk a few UFA's, like Burke did, rather than accept tiny returns. It seemed to work then as the flames were able to make seemingly better trades after the whole Cammalleri trade deadline fiasco. Conroy needs to think long-term and build a solid reputation.

Toffoli return was fine as we needed to shed cap regardless.

Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but the Leafs signed D Simon Benoit to a one year contract. No big whoop.

Perhaps a 3rd team get get involved to take on cap, but they aren't going to be doing it for nothing, so you have to add more value to the trade just to facilitate that.

Benn is a non-starter in any trade discussions I think.
Retention makes it possible....even if its improbable.

I think he got hair replacement surgery.

Earlier in the offseason a pic was floating around and it looked like it was just done.

Is that just Sam Bennett wearing a beret and holding a baguette while talking in a bad French accent? Like his French alter ego or something.

It's one of surgery, a system, or concealer:
