I was about to come here and say the same. No Hard Feelings surprised me, in that I thought it would be horrible, but ended up liking the movie overall.

I enjoyed Day of Soldado. Benicio Del Toro is such a bad ass. End left me anticipating his day of retribution.

Fah Q for this post. I watched it because I like movies that affect you. I was expecting a little more Hollywood and hadn’t realized who directed it until the end. Definitely set my record for crying in a movie. Just devastating from start to finish. It’s Requiem For a Dream, with Brokeback Mountain and Dead Poets Society mixed in.

Yea Whale is a good movie. Quite sad, obviously but I thought all the actors in it knocked it out of the park. One of those movies that definitely makes you think.

Raymond and Ray on Apple might be up your alley, then. Similar kinda tone.

The Whale was one of those movies where there was zero question in my mind about the accolades it received. I'm a bit ticked that Hong Chau didn't win best supporting actress and Jamie Lee Curtis did.

We watch a pretty wide gamut of movies, but I haven't watched anything anime-ish in like a decade (other than Castlevania on Netflix I suppose) and my wife suggested we watch Your Name.. Never heard of it, but apparently it was the top grossing film in Japan in 2016, and is #84 all-time on IMDB.

Just an absolutely achingly beautiful movie. I am a mess. It rocks so much I can't even describe it, other than its been less than an hour since I watched it and I'm already absolutely disgusted that Hollywood is making a completely unnecessary live-action remake.

A Silent Voice is a similarly great but heart breaking anime.

After William Friedkin passed away I picked up a few of his movies to give a watch and first one was the wild movie Killer Joe. It was a great film but I'm not sure it's one I would recommend. It's very wild and really earns that NC-17 rating, and that ending is intense. Mathew McConaughey is great in it, his character is a cross between his True Detective and Texas Chainsaw Massacre characters. He plays a cop who is a hired hitman that this one family hires to kill their Mom so they can get her insurance money. Friedkin did a fantastic job directing this southern noir film.

I saw Killer Joe in theatres when it came out and yeah, it's wild...

It's between The French Connection and To Live and Die in L.A. for my favourite Friedkin movie: to anyone who hasn't seen one or both, you should check 'em out!

I found the Sound Of Freedom to be quite disturbing. There were a couple of ladies sitting next to me and they walked out half way through the movie. I found out later there were 8 more people that walked out.

Criterion Channel has a collection of the Roger Corman Poe adaptations, most starring Vincient Price, and I'm living.

Oh man that one was tough.

Some more that I've enjoyed:

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Summer Wars
Weathering With You
When Marnie Was There
Josee, The Tiger and the Fish
Violet Evergarden (Haven't seen the movie but from what I understand it's basically the series which is great)

There's also some anime series that will leave you emotionally wrecked:
Your Lie in April
Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day

The Whale is an incredible film... for me, one of the best ever. I'll never be able to confirm my opinion though because it's something I never want to watch ever again.

Films that try to string together multiple narratives (i.e. grief, redemption, addiction, etc...) usually fall on its face and become an incomprehensible mess. I don't know how Aronofsky pulled it off.

If you're into The Whale, check out The Florida Project if you haven't seen it already. That film affected me in the same way, but just in a more raw fashion.

One of those movies that I was glad I watched, but not sure I could handle that emotional experience a second time.

Florida Project was sooooo good. Loved that movie.

I saw Gran Turismo last week and super enjoyed it. Great, fun show.

Rewatched Blood Diamond last night, I'm trying to remember if anyone at the time criticized Leonardo's South African accent because I thought it was quite consistent and accurate, from my limited experience of having a South African coworker for a few years.

Oh yeah, Jennifer Connelly. That's why I put it on my list.

No one is into the whale FFS. Just walk down the street and see how we can all hate the F out of ourselves.

Most disappointing movie of the year for me. Not that it was super terrible, but just way to kiddy and childish. I wasn't expecting a Barbie-like transformation, but this film was 100% aimed at little kids. Last time I checked those of us who grew up with Mario are adults now, so would have been good to see some of the theme aimed more at my generation.
