Wow, low end bridge. Tells you the Rangers don't see much upside nor want to pay for what he is currently bringing to the table. A show me contract.

I'd say more that they were in a cap crunch, and squeezed Laf. The Rangers have $728K in space now with 22 man roster. I'm a bit surprised that a 39 point 3rd year winger gave up two years at $2.325M, and not just one.

For comparison, the Flames got Dube done at $2.3M x 3 years after a .43PPG season, while Laf just put up a .48PPG and took $2.325 x 2 years...so I guess it's about market value.

Even this is probably an overpayment. Takes a lot of nights off.

Which isn’t what second contracts have turned into the last few years.

Exactly. I was responding to a post that suggested this contract meant that the Rangers had little faith in him improving.

He’s one of the better players to score 5v5 on their squad. Gets little to no PP time.

the problem is they don’t play Panarin/Kreider/Chytil on the right side. Everyone is playing LW so Laf has to play RW to get any top 6 time and it just hasn’t worked out.

Another thing to consider is that Lafrenière is a power winger and a lot of his game revolves around holding onto the puck to create time and space for his line mates. Usually speaking those types of players take time to develop as strength and balance is a key element to thier game.

I am quite confident he will turn into a 70 point player who impacts the game in many ways but it just might not be with New York. New York has been playing him 13-14 minutes a night, eventually you have to start giving him the reigns and allow him to take that next step.

Yeah it doesn’t help his case that the team is loaded. But he’ll be fine as he slowly moves up the lineup.
