I'd call Sutter wise and highly competent, but to the detriment of interpersonal relationships.

His boundaries are not that of your average boss/working professional.

Good thing it paid off for him with a couple of championships. But you saw here what happens with guys like Sutter when the results are no longer there to justify the means.

You can taste the tears through the post lol. Leave Darryl alone.

Great family man and father first wtf does that have to do with how he treated people on the job, including support staff.

He's been blasted for this actions before it just became more in the spotlight last season because of the market and team struggled.

You don't hear many players come out and bash a coach who they won a title with and a guy with respect around the league like Justin Williams.

A legendary family (including being a pure family man/father first and foremost), an amazing playing career in which he was named Captain for the last 5 of his total 8 year career, playing through/coming back from handfuls of insane injuries, respected/beloved by many, if not most of his former players (including a number of players who have made sure to point out that Sutter is a family man and always cared deeply about what was going on in their personal lives and willing to go out of his way for them), is a legend among the LA fanbase, etc etc etc.

To try and tarnish his legacy and reputation for being something that he was always known for being (but still well-respected for) is comical.
lol

Is there something more deep, or do people simply hate Sutter because of his use of simple condescending one-liners?

Nothing more deep then everything that's out there.

I've met Darryl a handful of times in different situations. He's like everyone else - complicated. He's not some cartoon villain. I think it's just convenient to think he is.

Off the ice, yeah he's the real deal. Incredibly kind, hilarious and thoughtful.

But when you combine professional hockey coach, losing, and not playing the way he wants you to... it's not going to go great. He's obviously past his expiry date on those coaching methods. He shouldn't be coaching anymore and he isn't.

The whole Toffoli audio comment shows that it had nothing to do with Markstrom.

Lol simple condescending one liners.

As if that is the only he does. If he is such a great father and family man maybe he should learn to treat people with the same respect especially on the job. Being mentally abusive to people is not okay regardless of the paycheque.

Couple that with the fact he never owns up to his mistakes because its never Darryl's fault always the players.

You take this stuff too seriously. Whitney isn’t actually an Oilers fanboy, he’s just playing a character to drive clicks. Same thing with Biz and the Flames/Leafs/Yotes.

There’s plenty of times Whitney has absolutely shredded the Oilers organization and the city of Edmonton.

This. I also think Sutter became an issue last season. But I'd rather him than a two faced coach - at least he's staked out his position and isn't pretending otherwise.

I think that interview reinforces that there were factions within the team for and against Sutter as well. Hopefully the anti Sutter players get their #### together

You talk to players that played for him, no one ever doubts that he is amazing at his vocation of being a coach. Loving your own kids and family is pretty damn easy and no one should be commended for that.

He's a great coach and one of the best in history and like the rest of them, they are not well liked at fellow humans. I think some players/people can ignore that and some can't. I don't think I could look past that but some could leverage his negative style into a positive. Just different personalities can do that. Probably people who were abused themselves.

If the only love you know came with the odd back of a hand, you'd probably love Sutts, if you had a dad who didn't hit you, probably won't be able to relate.

Biz and Whit started their Flames/Oilers fan boy thing early on in the 2021/22 season. Before that, Whit never had a good thing to say about the Oilers or the city of Edmonton. He would pretty regularly dump on the team and the city. Which to me, actually makes him and his Oilers “fandom” even more annoying.

What a horrible thing to have to pretend to help drive clicks. He must have drawn the short straw.

Toffoli seems to have talked a ton of #### about Sutter though. If he's on the pro Sutter side, must be a short list
