He also got beat on a lot of goals he should have had though. It looked like a team that was playing scared because of goaltending.
No doubt he can be better, but I don't think the team played scared because of goaltending. Turning it over in the offensive zone yes, but you don't play the system to a T if you are playing scared.
I think the over aggressive chasing style is what led to giving up a lot of the chances. Look at how many gambles they took leaving coverage to chase the puck to make an aggressive play.
I am not the biggest Markstrom fan, but I don't blame the season on him alone you can't expect your goalie to face 25 shots a game and half them are wide open looks.
Probably why all those first time goalies looked like stars vs us getting a bunch of easy volume shots from the outside to boost the save % while our goalie was was facing guys wide open.

I think the Flames got caught up early in games by having the possession advantage but nothing to show for it. So they pressed harder and harder until they were giving up chances instead of just continuing the steady play.

Not having an effective PP was the real death blow. Had they been more able to capitalize consistently on other team's penalties (which is crucial for a team driving possession and drawing penalties), the season would have been vastly different.

Extremely frustrating to watch them come out controlling the play and to draw a penalty only to look completely pedestrian on the PP and kill all momentum.

Didn't Conroy say they were playing man-on-man too much which a) makes it hard on centers and b) is a ####show when someone breaks down leading to high danger chances against.

Pretty sure it was Huska, but yes I definitely remember that.

The man on man defending was discussed by Conroy on something he saw from above that needed to be changed on the ROb Kerr podcast.
Huska has discussed tweaking how we defend, and Conory stated on the same podcast that it was important for him and Huska to be on the same page to change the coverage in our end.
Huberdeau mentioned the defensive zone coverage being a big change for him as well coming here last season.
I thought the team struggled a lot playing that way.
When you watch how other teams set up to defend us they knew it was all about outside shots and volume so they packed it in the middle and just let us skate around the outside.

One on one is great until someone loses a battle. Then it falls apart.
With the above quote, over an hour with Tyler Toffolli on Spittin Chiclets.
Pre-trade, but Sutter was already gone.
Starts around the 1:07mark. Talks Worlds and Junior.
1:25 or so talks about first camp and being drafted.
1:37 Darryl talk. Toffolli loved him.
1:40:30, Winsport!
1:42.20 surprise surprise, the pearl clutching over Sutter pretending to not know Pelletier's name was overblown. And doesn't have much sympathy for the fact he was called up and not played day 1, as he didn't play for 2 weeks after getting called up.
1:58:45, with regards to this season.
1:59:30 -Weeger's Dome comments.
Nsfw if you get offended by the odd swear word or off color remark.

What the ####…. Backlund had his kid at 4 am, called into work saying he wouldn’t be there that day (obviously), and Darryl had the trainer call him back and say he had to skate??? It’s right after the Pelletier story.
Good-####ing-riddance .

Funny how that poster left that part out, or the fact Toffoli said thats why Sutter was fired here and LA for his condescending ways. Its what you expect from him one of the few who jump in to defend mental abuse by the coach as being ok.
Also the Pelletier stuff was an issue in the locker it was brought up by many people just because one of the few Sutter guys who have been used to his ways thought it was whatever doesn't make it better.
The story is not just him sitting but the Flames made plans to fly his family in to catch his first game and Sutter played mind games by switching it up on them.
Talk about tarnishing your legacy to the extreme, thank god hes gone and I hope these idiot podcasters stop asking everyone for funny which end up putting him a worse light stories and let our franchise heal and move on.

You know oiler fanboy Whitney was relishing that ####.
The story about weegar being shocked at himself for bringing up the arena in the end of year presser was really funny though. He probably realized he was going to make waves with the media people after that.

It's hilarious to me how people use these stories as some sort of revelation into what is Darryl Sutter when in reality, he's been the exact same person throughout his entire career.
A legendary family (including being a pure family man/father first and foremost), an amazing playing career in which he was named Captain for the last 5 of his total 8 year career, playing through/coming back from handfuls of insane injuries, respected/beloved by many, if not most of his former players (including a number of players who have made sure to point out that Sutter is a family man and always cared deeply about what was going on in their personal lives and willing to go out of his way for them), is a legend among the LA fanbase, etc etc etc.
To try and tarnish his legacy and reputation for being something that he was always known for being (but still well-respected for) is comical.
