Cheering for the Coyotes must be similar to cheering for the Edmonton Elks.
Except the Coyotes have won a home game in the last 4 years.
Similar chaos though.

Actually it's more akin to cheering for the Calgary Flames.. it's not THAT far off tbqh.
Both teams are absolutely miserable to be a fan of.. Sans 2004 in Calgary and 2012 in AZ

Not to defend the Coyotes, but dropping a picture from an event 34 years ago doesn't really help the Flames' cause. Since the Coyotes came into existence in 1997 the Flames have missed the playoffs 16 times to the Coyotes 17 times. Calgary has won six rounds in the playoffs during that time, including three in the 2004 run. Arizona has won only three rounds which is pretty pathetic, but when it comes to conference final droughts the Flames are 4th worst in the league, behind only Columbus (23 years), Toronto (21 years), and Minnesota (20 years). The Flames haven't made it to the junior prom in 18 years! Arizona was last there 11 years ago. Both franchises are pretty bad when it comes to results.

One Cup sure takes the sting out of it sure but let's be real.
Both teams may or may not get an arena built in their current location.
The Yotes have made a conference final more recently.
Both teams are an absolute mess.. historically

One team is an absolute mess - maybe the worst franchise in North American professional sports. The other team has been lousy, performance-wise, for a while. They are not comparable.

Whatever makes you feel better about it. LOL I'm not in denial - But the Coyotes are one arena away from being a world class operation. Show and prove but it's true. The owner has the money and the city is a one of the best places to live during the NHL season.
Same as Calgary and The Flames. Maybe not the best place to live for players due to weather, media and lack of anonymity but Calgary is similarly a vacation destination due to the proximity to the Mountains, etc.
On the ice Lanny outlined my points..
I've lived a life of being a fan of absolutely pathetic teams. Sans one small handful of years each.
(I became a fan of the Dbacks in 2000, enjoyed the 2001 World Series from Calgary) and pray they can be good yearly.
Same with the Suns, I became a fan in about 2003 - We nearly won it all in 2021 and finally have an owner who doesn't sabotage his own team. I'm praying for a parade this year.. come one sweet heavens!
I know the Arizona Coyotes are an absolute joke, but I refuse to judge this market until it's actually in a location to succeed.
Anyway, the Coffee is kicking in nicely this morning! wooo

I've always thought if the arena was on east side near 101 somewhere the Coyotes would be more successful but that ship has sailed with Vegas coming into the league.
Phoenix missed the opportunity to create a loyal fan base and capitalize on incoming tourist/snowbirds and fans of northern teams flying in for weekends by having the arena so far away from where these people stay and have places.
Why would anyone now fly to PHX to spend a weekend and watch their team when they can fly to Vegas and have a much more entertaining weekend outside of a 3hrs hockey game.

Don't under-estimate the attraction of Scottsdale and the valley of the sun. Sure, Vegas is awesome for a 3-day jaunt, especially when you're younger, but Scottsdale et al is far more attractive, especially on a repeat basis, for people, once you've been there, done that, with Vegas (yes, I mean 'old people' here).
The attraction is still there. The opportunity is still there. If you build it, they will come. But you have to execute properly, and so far, that has proven to be a pretty elusive challenge for them.

In-laws have a place in DC ranch. I've been going to Scottsdale 2-3 times a year for past 8 years. have gone to 1 pre-season game in that time.
Majority of the people that live in the area are fans of 1 visiting team so those game would be a decent draw, Flames, Oilers (lots of Chicago people) etc. but other than that it would be local attendance and I don't think the interest is there with Phoenix residences for the 60+ games.
The best option would have been the Tempe area because of the promos that could be offered to the college students to get butts in seats.

They said this about Vegas too (and LA, and Carolina, and FLA and...), but the fans there are ravenous. Build a winner, and make the experience a good one, and people will come. And the fanbase will grow.

I don't know about that, they just need to be where their fanbase, corporate sponsors/high level ticket holders can actually go to weekday games. They're looking in the right locations currently. But students aren't make or break for the team, in fact I think they slimmed down the student section at Mullett this year.

The "BREAKING" is stupid and so overdone on social media, but in 32 thoughts, Friedman confirms that Salt Lake City is the frontrunner for relocation of the Coyotes. That would be my preference as I think they'd latch on and become a really great fanbase.
