Maybe I am giving people too much credit, but I wouldn't think that there is a big enough drive for this. There must be other factors (like Daradon said, publicity).
What's next? The United States starting a man hunt for Elvis? I bet there are more people who believe in Elvis than Bigfoot. I think some common sense needs to be exercised badly. I know the minority needs a voice, but come on, it's not like someone rights are being violated or anything of significance needs to be done. Wasting time and money trying to pass a bill about a mythical animal is completely idiotic.

Well it's actually supposed to live in Northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba from what I hear...
I love how everyone complains about the time and money taken to hear this crackpot out. Perhaps the MP has spent more time and more money opening up letters from the guy, and figures this would be a good way to get him off his ass? Also, it's likely a 5 minute discussion, not a lengthy debate. Spend the 5 minutes, talk about it, the guy shuts up so the MP can focus on more pressing matters.

Either that or it encourages more crackpots to harass their MPs.

Exactly. If the MP really is doing this just to get the guy or group off his back, then he is weak, and it only serves to think they have a legitimate issue, and every other fringe belief is going to be clawing for their 5 minutes.
Just tell the group that for a government to consider it, substaintial proof must be provided and when it is the issue can be considered, not the other way around.

I tried to find the original article, but it was dated Apr.5 (Edmonton Sun) so is no longer available. I did find another site that had a transcript of it. link
Quote:
Edmonton-Mill Woods- Beaumont MP Mike Lake offered the petition up March 28 in the House of Commons on behalf of a constituent who’s convinced Bigfoot exists and needs legal protection.
“You don’t make judgment calls on petitions,” Lake told Sun Media yesterday. “We try to do it as a service to constituents.”
Asked whether or not he believed in Bigfoot, the Tory offered a firm “No,” followed by a chuckle.
“But if he did exist, I’m sure he would vote NDP,” Lake kidded.

Bigfoot, the legendary hairy man-like beast said to roam the wildernesses of North America, is not shy, merely so rare it risks extinction and should be protected as an endangered species.
So says Canadian MP Mike Lake who has called for Bigfoot to be protected under Canada's species at risk act, alongside Whooping Cranes, Blue Whales, and Red Mulberry trees.

Do you want to make a difference in Ottawa, albeit small?
I found the address for this MP and his constituency and I have mailed them off a letter letting them know exactly how I feel about putting Bigfoot on the endangered species list as well as the treatment of Shane Doan.
Here are the e-mail addresses and I will post a copy of the letter that I sent. I am going to try and find Ken Dryden's e-mail address as well and send him a copy too.
Parliament:

Constituency:
lakem1@parl.gc.ca
Dear Mr. Lake,
I just received an email that showed a link to a Yahoo website which talks about you working to put Bigfoot on the endangered species list.
Please don’t mention that the western provinces support you and above all please don’t take your ridiculous plan to the US. I plan to travel there and don’t want to be humiliated by being associated with something so trivial. Your website infers you are University educated. I am sure the U of A and your constituents in Edmonton are very proud of you. Perhaps you should put common sense on the endangered list – it seems to be the most lacking in our country right now.
If you are associated with anyone concerning our Parliamentarians and Shane Done you could revel with them as well. Tell them about being team captain and scoring 3 goals in 6 minutes. There may not be enough eggs in Ottawa to cover those faces.
We have enough problems in Canada that deserve your conscientious time. That our Parliamentarians are now involved in putting Bigfoot on the endangered species list, that they are now involved in the selection of the captain of Team Canada, while people are on 2 year waiting lists for health care, while the infrastructure of our country has gone to pot, while people are on the streets because there is not affordable housing, while court cases against pedophiles are backlogged because they cant process evidence fast enough, while there are serious holes regarding security in our great country, while there are all kinds of other issues that would be top priority, well it is mindboggling.
Your time may be better spent being remembered as someone who actually made a difference to such things as health care, transportation, exports, restoring Canada’s world wide image, seriously cleaning up pollution, just to name a few.
Are you prepared to make a hat trick to Canada’s future? Give it a try. Who knows, maybe someone will then remember you for actually making a contribution to Canada and a difference in our society.
Thank you.

Thats funny
I want my MP to cross the floor and join the Liberals...its Steve Harper. He doesn't have to listen to me though, no matter how "fervent" I am about it.
Seriously, politicians are not there to bring up everyones pet issue, they are there to govern the country. This MP should be thrown out for wasting everyones time until he comes back and apologizes for doing so.

I'd like to introduce a private members bill that states that the only way to prevent the extinction on big foot and other endangered species is to arm them.
Seeing a bear taking shots at a fleeing hunter before dragging his carcass back to his cave to make a human skin rug so that the bear and his mate can get funky in front of a fire is a pretty funny image.

Well, this is not really surprising. Honestly.
I did a placement in a politician's office for a good couple-handful of months. You would not believe what people call about - again and again. And think it is of serious concern.
One person phoned/contacted/wrote letters a grand total of ~ 10 - 15 times about how her neighbour's BBQ smoke made her back yard too smokey. Only problem was this was not this gov't member's level of responsibility, it was a municipal thing. Everytime this person was told that, everytime they kept complaining.
One person complained that the noise from the bars downtown kept her from sleeping at night. Only thing being the bars were downtown (like I said) and this person lived on the outer edge of the city. So she was absolutely nowhere near the bars (it would be like complaining about the noise from the downtown bars when you are living say in Tuscany).
Those are but 2 examples. I could go on, and on, and on.....people are extremely persistent with their politicians about their certain, umm, interesting concerns and complaints. A few people actually have to be barred from their MLAs office because they are, well to put it politely, so "persistent".
