Also, Kulich just set the record for most goals by an 18 year old in AHL history during the regular season. And he’s the first U-19 player to be more than a PPG in the AHL playoffs since 1944.
Would absolutely love to get this player but I imagine he is too highly valued by the sabres.

I am now convinced he needs to be included in any deal with Buffalo, Kulich...Easter Bread...needs to be paired with Mangiapane.

It’s interesting comparing prospect pools for Detroit and Buffalo. Buffalo has a much better selection to choose from in a trade compared to Detroit (Detroit has had terrible luck with draft lotteries during their rebuild). I assume the top 3-4 prospects for each team are off the table if a 2024 first round pick is included in a trade for Hanifin.

He’s my favourite “realistic” target there (assuming guys like Quinn aren’t available). They have a backlog at F, so something has to give. They’ll have to move somebody soon just for internal development.

I’ve heard him (Kulich) compared to Filip Forsberg. Yes please.

Hanifin is a legit top 2 defenceman whos still only 25.
I'd hope to god that any trade with Buffalo or Detroit included more than just 1 of their top 4 prospects... anything less is severely undervaluing an extended Hanifin.
Why are we assuming that we cant/shouldn't get a top prospect + again?
Both those teams would instantly slot Hanifin into their top 2, maybe Buffalo top 4 but still.

It’s just that returns have been mostly disappointing for good players that are under contract this year. And earlier this offseason, it was reported that the offers the flames were receiving for their upcoming UFAs have been underwhelming.
Keep in mind that a trade with Buffalo returning their 5th + 6th best prospects would likely be pretty equivalent to getting the #1/2/3 prospect from most other teams in a trade. Their prospect pool is that deep.

That's very strange because both teams have plenty of LD, and great prospects at LD.

Well you're not wrong, but only Erik Karlsson whos on the last legs of his career @ 11M+ a season would be a "close" comp if you can even call it that.
Even with say Buffalo having 5-6 good prospects, its almost guaranteed that almost 90% of those wont turn into a Hanifin. So its easy and almost always the case where prospects are overvalued.

I see that Pat has a summer edition of Flames talk this afternoon and I got all excited because of the rumblings here and an out of the blue scheduled Flames talk. Something needs to happen in the next hour or so to make sense. I assume if it is a random midsummer type podcast that he will have a decent slate of guests likely including Conroy.

I see sportsnet twitter says join us all week at 3pm. Might be just this week or perhaps back to regular scheduling.
Edit: Two weeks, then a week off, then back to full time.

While I would love a kulich, kasper or evidsson in a hanifin deal I just don't see it happening. Feels like pending UFAs just don't hold that type of value in today's market.
I think it would be something like
2023 1st + Olli maata + Amadeus Lombardi

It wont be for an expiring Hanfin.
Any potential deal will include an extension in place, cant pretty much guarantee that at this point.

You’re right. Looking back at any team’s top 4-5 prospects at any time over the years, it’s almost a certainty that 2-3 of them never become more than third/fourth line players.
And Buffalo’s logjam of young, skilled NHL forwards could prevent some of their high end forward prospects from developing properly due to lack of opportunity to play in a top six role. It would be good asset management to trade these players when they are at their highest value as prospects that are highly touted.
However, I still don’t think a Buffalo will trade one their top 4 prospects. The trade returns have just been too disappointing for quality players lately.

That doesn’t look any better than a deadline deal so why downgrade the team now when they can get a similar offer in season?

Probably because they don’t want the distraction during season. I’m not sure what they will get for hanifin but I don’t think it’s going to be much more of a meh trade. Flames are kinda painted in a corner and teams know it.

Especially with Detroit, Yzerman is heading into season number five without playoffs. All of his offseason moves to shore up the Red Wings depth (e.g. Fischer, Debrincat, Compher, Walman, Chariot, Holl, and Kostin), indicate that Detroit is trying to compete right now and don't really have another 3-4 years to wait until all of their fancy prospects are developed.
A sign and trade of Hanifin, a 26 year old top-pairing defenseman, to a team that really needs him (e.g. Detroit, where he'd be their de facto #2), should command a premium.

Should, perhaps?
But Detroit does not need to trade for him, while Calgary most certainly wants to move him.
With cap space being at a premium right now, I don't think any premium is forthcoming.
If teams were lining up to trade for Hanifin, he already would have been traded.
There is a limited market for Hanifin due to cap space, which is unfortunate becuase the Flames should have had a more coveted asset than he is.

The Sabres love the Samuelsson-Dahlin pairing, even though it means playing Dahlin on his off side. Power is a natural LD as well, so pairing him with Hanifin would mean moving Power to his weak side. Not sure they’d want to do that with a core young D. But Power has played RD at times in the past, so it’s possible.
The Wings seem like a better fit. Seider is a lock at LD and his pairing with RD Walman looks like it’s set in stone. Mataa is a stop-gap in the top 4 until Edvinsson arrives (which might be as soon as this upcoming season). I guess they could move Edvinsson to RD, because they sure aren’t projecting him as a 3rd pairing guy.
Hanifin is a valuable asset. But one of the difficulties with moving him is the handful of teams still looking for top-4 D that have the cap space for a fat long-term extension are weak at RD, not LD.

I could see Detroit moving Sandin-Pellika in the right move and if Hanifin comes with an extension.
He was their 2nd pick in the 2023 draft, which sometimes teams are more willing to part with.
Detroit already has Wallinder, Edvinsson as potential NHL pieces on defense to go along with Seider, and both them are a lot closer than Sandin who is a couple years away.
I could see something like:
Matta
Sandin-Pelikka
Soderblom
for
Hanifin
