I’d guess Anderson. Would have said Backlund if he wanted to stay.

I agree with the Andersson vote, I'm good with that.

But is it too early to suggest Jacob Pellerier? I love the kids attitude towards welcoming new players; he's always the first to text them. He took Coronato under his wing when he arrived. His enthusiasm is infectious. Just my 2 cents.

Yes, he's only played 24 NHL games.

He could certainly be in the conversation 3-5yrs from now though.

This is a Captain.

(I know, I know. It's just going to take a long time before I'll get over it.)

I really want to see Huberdeau be given the opportunity to take his game to the next level. He was so drastically underutilized by Sutter. A large part of the team and the offence should be built around putting Huberdeau in the best possible position. If that means giving Huberdeau a chance at leading, then so be it.

Huberdeau is an absolutely brilliant coordinator for the offence, with elite level skills. Whether he's a motivator in the locker room or not...I have no idea. The difficulty with having fans input on who the captain should be is that none of us know what's going on in the locker room. We just see the bland hockey-style interviews.

So you want the C stripped from Barkov?

Honestly, I don't have the energy to get into it anymore. Some people hate. Some people don't hate. Nobody fu***ng cares. It's not like anything's ever gonna fu***ng change. Flames are gonna Flames. Fans are gonna fans.

If Tkachuk wanted to be Captain of the Flames, he would be captain of the Flames with an 8 year $10.5M contract.

He wanted out.

I've said this before but Huberdeau didn't get the captaincy in Florida when he was the longest tenured Panther and instead they gave it to Barkov who is awkward choice to begin with. Huby shouldn't even be on the short list. Only real option here is Andersson, maybe Backlund if he extends.

Different room. Hubby has shown more leadership in Calgary than in Florida.

It blows my mind that some people can't understand the possiblity of external reasons for wanting out.

Gaudreau
Tkachuk
Lindholm
Hanifin
Backlund
Toffoli

But yeah, Tkachuk's the only one to blame for wanting out.

Edit: Not to mention Darryl Sutter himself saying there was no one on our team capable of being a captain. So... no, he literally couldn't have been the Captain whether he stayed or not.

Of course he had external reasons for wanting out. Which still means he shouldn't be captain, and furthermore means it wouldn't have made a difference if he was offered it.

Did he not also say in negotiations that he wanted to be captain and to have it within his new contract and the Flames said no?

Nah, Ruzicka said that's what he thought. Which was maybe not even an accurate translation of the interview (in Slovak).

EDIT: and this (who knows if it's valid) says that he was offered it and still said no:

https://www.hawksinsider.com/Matthew...-Flames-143234

But it makes no sense that it was a factor because he went from a situation where he might have been captain to one where he's for sure not going to be.

I'm not saying it's Tkachuk's fault. I'm just saying I'm not going to sit here dreaming of Tkachuk being captain because if he wanted that he could be captain.

He made the choice not to be here, whatever his reasons were.

Also Darryl Sutter is gone...and I do think Treliving would have pushed for Tkachuk to have the captaincy if that's truly what he wanted.

Yeah that's fair. I'm just, like... I dunno. I mean, what's with the mass exodus? We have the most likeable GM on the planet, we got rid of Sutter and promoted a guy to replace him that all the players like... Yet Toffoli still wanted out, Hannifin still wants out, Backlund still wants out, Lindholm still wants... I'm not sure, actually.

Aren't there any investigative reporters left? Like, what exactly happened and how do we know it's not going to happen again. It's just crazy to me that 8 of the top 10 players on this team from a couple years ago all want(ed) out and no ones asking for answers.

Like, if 8 people in a 22-person company suddenly decided they didn't want to work there anymore... Wouldn't their investors and customers wonder what the heck happened there? Where are the advertisers, season ticket holders and fans demanding to know a) what happened and b) assurances it won't happen again?

Anyway, I'm probably just yelling at clouds again.

Gaudreau’s dad had a heart attack and nearly died. COVID travel restrictions to Canada made it very difficult for him to see his family. He chose to go back closer to them.

Tkachuk was willing to sign for 6 years coming off his ELC - Treliving chose to prioritize keeping Frolik, and signed Neal to an albatross contract the year previous. (And also signed Brouwer to a garbage deal that was eating up money that could’ve gone to Tkachuk).

Neither got along with the coach, and as they held all the power last summer, they used it.

Toffoli has a shot at one more big contract, and he’s got two rings already - he wants to play meaningful hockey.

Backlund has never been past the second round and he’ll be 35.

Lindholm and Hanifin can go anywhere they want next year, and make functionally the same amount of money (barring major injuries).

First time HC, rookie GM, question marks in goal, question marks if Huberdeau is washed before his 8 year deal even starts (I don’t think he is), no elite players under 28, no hotshot prospects on the level of Gaudreau/Tkachuk on the way, old building, small Canadian market.

It isn’t complicated, it isn’t personal - it’s bad timing.

I'm not a fan of the direction that the talk is about but that is what it is. I also think ownership gets more blame than deserved. I will admit to loving the Chaos with the team and its fans right now.
