Here's the thing that really got me, but it felt like it was where all the old grizzled service staff went once they were past their best before date in Maui or Hawaii. Like, everyone was a truck stop waitress and all the dudes just seemed angry. I really didn't like it and I strongly advise everyone to stay away from there unless you want to hang out in what can only be described as an off-brand Hawaiian experience.
If you didn't go up Mauna Loa, you really missed out on the best part of the island. Watching the sun set up there is incredible, as you struggle to breathe(as does your rented Jeep Compass redlining!).

I did go there. Thought it was boring. I'm also not into sunsets or sunrises. They do literally nothing for me. In fact, I have a theory that nobody really gives a #### about them, but we're all just pretending (except me).

“A great place to watch the sun set” just makes a place sound so lame. I get it, sometimes a a sunset looks nice, but I feel like it’s a terrible endorsement of a place to say “the only redeeming factor is that you can look at the thing that happens once every day while you’re there.” Yikes.

The only reasons to watch a sunset are for wonderful photos or to please the wife.

There isn't a human being on god's green earth who wants to see a photo of your sunset.

Naw, it wasn't just the sunset, though it was quite different up there. Just a cool experience all around seeing all the sciencey stuff up there. I've been that high up in the Andes, but it's not the same. Whatever, it was a cool experience for us. I'm sure some people would much rather be on a cruise ship than the top of some rocky volcano. Good for them, not for me.

I mostly agree. The Big Island is definitely more redneck (or whatever the Hawaiian equivalent is) than the other islands and it is probably my least favorite of the 4 I've been to.

But it's still worth going to. I wouldn't plan a whole multi-week vacation around it, but I stayed there for a few nights on the way to Maui and had a great time. The beaches aren't great, but some of the landscape like the Waipio Valley, the newer lava fields, and the Volcanoes National Park are pretty unlike anything I've ever seen.

I'm pretty sure you could make a winning online dating profile by inversing Sliver's opinions:

"Likes dogs, sunsets, and patiently listening to other people's opinions

Dislikes bunkers and homemade cosmetics"

Pretty sad stuff. Lahaina had some old time charm that will be really nearly impossible to recreate. Unbelievable that the death toll is this high, but with dry conditions and high winds its a dangerous combination. My inlaws were evacuated from Osoyoos just over a week ago with next to no notice. But enough to get out. Shows how powerful nature is and the wrath it can unleash.

i was talking with my puro driver about this earlier today. i swear he told me that he saw a video last night that showed lasers coming down from the sky that started the fire.

now... with that being said, he also honestly believes that (his words) "shape shifting lizard people run all the world governments"

so maybe take the laser thing with a grain of salt.

he's a really nice guy, but he needs to stop watching all the tinfoil hat videos!

Naw man, #### that. You don't get off that easy. Yellow slide, 5:30, and no throwing rocks this time.

I was mostly acknowledging that some people like different stuff. Some people even like cruises.

I have access to a 3br unit in Kihei that is still operating. Sleeps 8. Could supply at my cost from the resort given the circumstances.

Awesome offer, I forgot to mention we put them up at the family place. He's already fixing stuff up (plumber by trade)!

Excellent! Thrilled to hear that worked out.

He maybe should just stick around. There will be tremendous demand for trades there in the rebuilding. Definitely worse places to stay for work...

Although Maui is extremely hostile to new development, so we'll see how the rebuild goes.

THere was a good mocking tiktok on that, I laughed at it because I have a bunch of firework vids on my phone. I would never look back at them, no one would ask for them.

"HEY!!, do you have videos of last years fireworks on your phone?" "Do I!??? *feversishly scrolls through for them as guy turns around to watch the actual firworks.
