Wildfires in Maui, Lahaina in Flames
We posted this in the Drayton Valley fire thread but it could use its own. I know a lot of CP'ers and Albertans in general have travelled to Maui over the years.
Two wildfires stoked by high winds from Hurricane Dora have led to some devastating results. The town of Lahaina appears to be burning to the ground, with reports of people jumping into the ocean to escape the flames, and picked up by the Coast Guard. All access into West Maui is closed as of this time.
The second wildfire appears to be NE of Kihei, on the flanks of Haleakala. Evacuations are underway in some areas near there as well.

Sad day. Although we don't stay or go to Lahina often when we do go to Maui, it has special memories. First place we had shaved ice, Baby Beach with our kids, Mauigrown coffee(!), and the worst news losing Lahina Grill. Been there a few times, with my parents, babies, kids.. probably my favorite restaurant in all of Hawaii. Wife and I went there first on honeymoon and today is our anniversary, sad!
I leaned in the flood its stuff and will be rebuilt. People are irreplaceable. Yet I am sad at the destruction of this memorable place. Especially to lots of good people.

Of course I hope no one is killed or seriously injured, but I thought of that huge banyan tree in the town square. If the buildings are burning I'm sure it's gone as well.

There's a video out there on twitter from an evacuating vehicle where a body is clearly seen on the ground. Sadly there may be casualties from this.

No idea about Banyans specifically, but I'm always amazed at some of the super old growth cedars that show signs of surviving fires. Hopefully there's a chance for it, and it gets some cool scars as a monument to what happened.

Alright, this is far worse than I thought if someone was killed. Damn.
That old banyan tree was planted in 1873, takes up the entire park/square in the middle of Lahaina. Just checked, it's noted as the oldest tree in Hawaii.

We just got back from there 9 days ago. It's really heartbreaking for the people there with the lives, homes and history lost. And it's not even over.

I have family that has a vacation place in Lahaina. As far as they know, it should be okay based on it's location. Lines are down, though, so they aren't certain.

I was telling my friend earlier this morning that some of those harrowing clips remind me a lot of some of the clips from the Fort Mac fires.
Terrible thing to hear about.
