It’s absolutely crappy that my son and I can’t enjoy a shave ice on front street and have it be the same as I remember. Ugh. Feel terrible for the local people

Is this satire?

I was foggy on whether we ever went to Lahaina, but then your post on the tree triggered my memory. That tree was incredible! I remember when we went, they had a local artists exhibition in/around it and we bought a couple photos from a photographer.

I feel bad for the locals and their families and the pets lost. Sounds like they were blindsided.

I don't really feel bad for the tourists who are sad about places they can't revisit now. That's small beans compared to what the locals are probably going through. Our thoughts should probably be with them.

I think you can be sad for both, as I wrote. Its what bothers me about these threads is the folks waiting to shame people.

That whole town runs on tourism. The locals depend on it. It mourning something that helps the locals and helps the visitors. I’ve had countless conversations with folks that work and live in Lahina as their lives are interesting to me. If I greave the loss of Lahina Grill its not materialistic. That restaurant is the people, their story, my experiences with them, and our shared loss. I mourn everything and everyone.

Your welcome to debate me on this. I’ll just check my credentials up front that I have gone through a natural disaster, and spent numerous hours in grief counseling. Not that what I say goes, but I also not going to police you on how you process this disaster.

I've been doing that for years (ever). Watching any sort of tragedy or controversy thread and I wait for that first post that people will pounce on. Reading the replies. All sorts of good ones, good news by Bigtime, other reminisce of the time they were there, whatever, all legit, but the people who believe they are the smartest just can't comprehend that one of the other 7 Billion people isn't seeing the world in the exact same way they do.

At Bob's funeral, "man I'm gonna miss the days of having beers with Bob and going fishing with him"

Doofus: ITS TOOO SOON!!!! HE HAS CHILDREN!!!!

I'm actually surprised no one has tried to de-rail with the global warming thing yet, actually impressed no one has.

Jordan, you are alright in my books. (my books are foooked though).

And anyway, Maui is my favorite place on earth and this is absolutely insane that fire can do that so fast. That banyan tree, cool, but the multiple times I went there, didn't it smell like New York City intensity human piss? This is a nice tree but can we leave?

You gotta take a step back and just appreciate when there's a little ####-show side quest in a thread, too. I think the "doofus" crew in a thread are usually the real MVPs. You need a common enemy for the best group cohesion. Bring in a guy totally focusing on the wrong thing and you can really liven things up.

That said, the guy lamenting how he can't have a shaved ice on the boardwalk was awesome. You have this incredible tragedy unfolding, 36 people dead, and buddy is thinking about how it'll be a few years before he can slurp on a slurpee in comfort. I'm really hoping Maui can rebuild ASAP so we can get him and his son out there; it's definitely the personal side of this nightmare that really brings it home and I'm glad he shared his harrowing tale of great loss with us.

Exactly, you hit a point and it's just tone deaf.

"With the expected impact on insurance rates, what will this mean for the Lambo I'm buying my kid for their 16th birthday?"

I've got a customer stuck on the island (7 of them in total, some grandkids in tow too), just flew in yesterday and his place is north of Lahaina. Spent the night at the High School in Kihei, flights are booked up fully to get back out, and I see WestJet and Air Canada have cancelled their YVR-OGG flights for today. I wonder if the government will contract them to operate rescue flights?

It was either yesterday or possibly the day before, just as this was all unfolding. We are putting them up until they can get back home. At least in the Kihei area he says cell service and everything is normal, plus it is pouring rain as of an hour ago. Hopefully that helps things.

i was showing my mom the helicopter footage that was posted earlier in this thread and she was pretty devastated.

all thru my life my folks never really had the 'travel bug'. probably around 2010 they decided to meet up with some friends that were vacationing in Maui. my folks LOVED it - especially my dad. after that trip they went every other year and enjoyed everything so much - the island, the people, the food - just everything. then my dad got sick and they couldn't go again. he asked my mom that when she was ready, to go back to Maui and spread his ashes. i think seeing all the devastation to these places where my mom has all these great memories with my dad was pretty tough on her.

the entire situation is just terrible. i feel awful for all the people there.
my wife and i grew up in kelowna (so we've been here a long time) and have had a few brushes with forest fires. in 2003 we had a couple friends who lost their houses to the okanagan mountain park fire - the situation then, like now, just sucks.

For anyone seeing videos coming up on social media or in come cases even the news: be careful, especially if you're sensitive to that kind of stuff. Some of them are very graphic and show really upsetting images with both people and animals.

I had to turn it all off too.
