The point is more about the huge ask from the flames... if Liljegren was offered that deal is done.

Fair enough. We can always send them a 4th round pick to even things up

Done! Verhaeghe please.

LW isn't a position of weakness on this team.

The prospect you want from Carolina is Alexander Nikishin.

I bet Tre folds. Toronto needs someone like Tanev.

Gotta be patient, though. Has two seasons left on his KHL contract.

Lindholm and Hanifin for Chucky. Give him the C and build the team around him.

So Fla went out and patched their d up. Short term, they are fine and don’t need hanifin immediately. Which weakens Conroys negotiations with Florida.

If not LW, we are looking for C RW or D in return for Hanifin. I can’t see any circumstance in which lundell is exchanged for Hanifin, which is probably our target. nor does Florida want to bust up a Stanley cup championship team. So we need to look away from Florida.

From what I can see, Seattle doesn’t have anything of interest for us that isn’t future related, and I’m guessing this will be a win now/hockey trade based on what we’ve seen. Why Carolina would trade anything of significance for Hanifin when they are looking to deal Pesce for the same reason is beyond me. And if Toronto is out, what are we left with?

I think Boston would do a deal for Hanifin. He’s been on sweeney’s radar for some time.

Dallas probably interested but can’t see anything there for us that would provide immediate help.

Don’t know why LA isn’t being mentioned more. Their d is less than stellar and they have some decent pieces that might interest us.

Washington seems like a team that wants to do something and their d isn’t particularly strong. Have some pieces that could interest us.

nyi was flogging pageau and wahlstrom for debrincat. They might have interest in upgrading their d. Pageau doesn’t fit what we are looking for and has a ntc so he probably won’t come.

I hadn't looked at Toronto's cap situation lately. Even with Murray and Muzzin going on full-season LTIR, they're still more than $2 million over the cap with a 22 man roster.

I don't think that matters. If Verhaeghe is on the table, you take that 10/10 times and worry about the LW logjam later.

Besides... Verhaeghe on the left with not-as-comfortable Huberdeau on the right is infinitely better than Huberdeau on the left with nobody on the right. Logjam already solved.

Florida patched up their D this year, next year is another story. If OEL bounces back I can see him extending with them, he seems really motivated so who knows. I would say there is about 0% chance Vergaege is on the table, he is super clutch and on an absolutely steal of a contract.

I don’t see Verhaeghe available. Reinhart on the other hand… I think he’d be a decent grab.

Yeah and the same contract situation as with Hanifin. He is also very good but obviously his next contract demands determine much of his value like with Noah.

For a 6’4”, 216 pound defenceman who beat Kirill Kaprizov’s U22 scoring record and led the KHL in scoring by defencemen, yes, you can wait. I think the bigger issue is that Carolina has told teams that he is off the table.

Edit: Dobber’s summary of Nikishin doesn’t lend you to think of him as an offensive dynamo, and that’s the thing that makes him sound so amazing to me: “A big-bodied defenceman with an aggressive mindset and a big slapshot.“

Also I'm not sure why people are lumping Laine and Werenski together with Gaudreau who is 30 while Laine is 25 and Werenski just turned 26. This is an extremely young team still and their window isn't open yet.
Again, I think you’re getting ahead of it.

Cap implications moving forward? When? Two years from now? 3 years from now? A lot can happen in that amount of time. Are all the Jackets prospects going to turn into +$6M dollar players?

I suspect the goal is to ice a competitive team this year. The way many GM’s approach things is they’ll figure it out when the time comes. In fact, I’d say that happens to almost all of them at some point.

Whether it’s Lindholm’s, who I suspect Gaudreau is pulling for or Schiefele, I’d be surprised if the BJ’s aren’t looking to improve at C, right now.
