He was always in over his head. Just Katz in lock step with Lowe collecting Hockey Canada peices at the time (Tambellini, even subsequently with Chiarelli, but that was over Lowe).
Nicholson was just in a political position with everyone in hockey and sponsors of hockey running to lick his boots when he was with HC, but when he has actual stuff to do with an NHL team he really had zero experience and provided nothing of value (outside of contacts suck as Chia and also Ken Hitchcock)
However that was fine because then Lowe could run things in that department too, as he did undermining coaches by talking directly to players for decades.
Crystal clear that this is a move to keep McDavid there, nothing more. I am sure that this was floated out years ago by McDavid as something to keep McDavid happy and have his people in positions of influence in the org.
Lowe, even though he was a puppteer and protected McDavid and Dria etc from any pesky team obligations, had to exit for that to happen, so that meant his media campaign to get elected into the HOF and then satisfy that rule to get his number retired in Edmonton had to be fulfilled and it was last year, was seemingly the reason he stayed for so long.
I don't think this guy takes over from Holland, but previous GMs have been impotent becuase someone else eventually tells Katz they can do better (Lowe) so Holland can deal with day to day and this guy deals with things to do with McDavid related stuff...we will see how that dynamic plays in the perpetually tiered dressing room.
What happened to the hubub around next David Poile in waiting, Keith Gretzky, from a few years ago?

How is this anything but a conflict of interest? If I'm the NHLPA, I'm seeking a ruling forcing McDavid to find new representation, regardless of whether either side wants to or not.
On what planet is it ok for someone to represent both a player and the team they play for (or any team, for that matter)?

It is fun watching the Coil flounder with their cap woes……signing McLeod to that 2 yr/$4.2MM really puts them in a bad pinch. It leaves them $3.5MM in cap space with Bouchard yet to sign. Even on a 1 yr bridge deal, $3.5MM isn’t going to get it done in that deal. Looking at the roster, the only choice they have is to move either Kulak or Foegele and bring up Caggiula or Broberg to free up an extra $1.5MM or so to bridge Bouchard.
Unless the top guys, including RNH and Hyman, against post career years this could be a pretty middle of the road hockey team. If McDavid or Draisaitl get hurt for a period of time they could miss the playoffs. But for certain, that is not a contending roster.

Nothing more deadmonton than how their teams' ownership responds to angry fans.
Frustrated fans that PAID for their seats not bothering anyone other than wearing a bag over their heads and get on TV? Ejected.
Fans rent out signs around town saying "FIRE LOWE!"? Get the town's police force involved.
Fans on chat boards discussing the sewering of their team? Hire a PR firm to impersonate fans online to deflect discussion.

Also Boomer when he was briefly working at CHED bringing on Cam Ward (who grew up nearby) after Carolina won the cup and the plug getting pulled mid interview and Boomer promptly being shown the door, only to bring his great talent to Calgary where we aren't sore losers over a harmless interview.
