You say this in jest, but there is a real possibility that they had a guy like Suniev in their top 30, and would have taken him much earlier if the option presented itself.

Hockeyprospect had Suniev at #31
Craig Button had Suniev at #36

I don't think people realize just how difficult it is to evaluate and project upwards of 300+ draft eligible kids a season. The variability on these lists is massive.

Poster: Sounds like they valued Suniev at their 2nd rounder but when Morin was there they had to take him. Still got lucky to get Suniev with 3rd. (Was actually mentioned by Flames brass)

CP: Why are you trying to do mental gymnastics to make the pick sound better.

Suniev and Morin were both very good picks.

Suniev was a projected 2nd round pick by alot of guys.

Suniev and Morin could easily be late 1sts in alot of draft years.

They got some serious potential!

Suniev ran out of runway. The way he was trending, if there was more hockey to be played and time before the draft, he could have kept moving up into the 1st round. I think I recall at least one source project him as high as 30th OA.

Well done!

Make sure a collection of hockey fans rooting for one particular team don't get to happy at any point about anything.

Need to stamp out anyone thinking things are going well in any facet of the team before it festers and turns into full on joy!

God's work I tell you.

It will be very interesting to see how the changes in organizational leadership will impact the team. The majority of the last season I had a weird feeling that something was going on behind the scenes. They were continually losing games to teams they had no business losing to. The players looked indifferent at times. You had lifer Flames like Backlund wanting out. It just looked like there was a great divide on the team. Sutter seems to have been singled out as the scapegoat. I think this season will define whether that’s the case.

In all honesty I felt the Flames had a much better team than their record showed. Goaltending was a massive issue. But it looked to me like team chemistry was the other. If they can sort out the chemistry issue. Which it looks like they are trying to do and let the best goalies play regardless of cap hit I still think the Flames can be competitive. I guess if my hunch is wrong we’ll find out that they are fundamentally not good enough.

So per your post. It could turn out very positively. Or there could be a harder reality. I don’t have any idea which fork it will take. Guess that’s why we all keep tuning in. Like a soap opera in a way.

There's good, but there's also blowing smoke up our own skirts.

- Iggy is back - Big whoop. Unless he is lacing them up it doesn't change the product on the ice.
- Pretty deep prospect pool now - no different than we had before. Almost every team picked up three or four good prospects. The Flames are still bottom third of the league.
- New coach and GM (that want to give young players every chance) - Let's wait until we see that the opening day roster looks like. It sounds great and all, but we also don't have the cap space to do anything but go younger.
- Arguably the top goaltending prospect in hockey. - Top five, yes. You'll get a lot of argument on top goaltending prospect. That appears to be pretty universally acknowledged as Wallstedt for the Wild. Looking forward to seeing what Wolf does, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.
- New rink - No shovels in the ground, let's not get ahead of ourselves.
We thought we had a deal last time too. Let's not get excited until the doors open.

Goalies are voodoo so who knows but the only thing Wallstedt has over Wolf right now is height and draft position.

A shade taller? Three inches taller and almost 60 pounds heavier. Not a shade larger, substantially larger. He's much more the prototypical NHL goaltender. Do I think he's better? Nope. I like Wolf. Just stops pucks. But Wallstedt has been the top goaltending prospect for a number of years and nothing has really changed to alter that ranking. Wolf has moved up, but Wallstedt has done nothing to marginalize his position atop the rankings.

Does Wallstedt have league MVP/position awards at every level he's played?

Don't give af about stature. Results trump all.

Otherwise The Calgary Tower would be in the hockey hall of fame.

Alas he is not. But we're retiring the jersey of a guy reported between 5'11" and 6'1" who chainsmoked in his off time but had crazy talent and put up the numbers.

Nothing says “Go Flames” like seeing a little of positives and explaining why none of them are worth feeling positive about

Wallstedt's resume is dogs*** compared to Wolf.

I don't think people realize just how difficult it is to evaluate and project upwards of 300+ draft eligible kids a season. The variability on these lists is massive.

I don't disagree that it is extremely difficult to evaluate guys the further down you get in the draft, but a 3rd round pick is still a 3rd round pick. If you're able to land a player you had ranked higher, that is great, but it doesn't change the position of the pick. If you had an actual 2nd round pick, you likely would have been able to select someone you had ranked even higher.

I like Wolf. Just stops pucks. But Wallstedt has been the top goaltending prospect for a number of years and nothing has really changed to alter that ranking. Wolf has moved up, but Wallstedt has done nothing to marginalize his position atop the rankings.

Sheesh. What does a guy have to do to supplant another who just happens to be physically bigger?

Wallstedt's first season in the AHL was pretty underwhelming by most reports and the stats back that up.

Wolf, well damn, stats, awards, etc. Heck there's even talk that Mitch Love was carried by Wolf.

Seriously. Wolf has easily shown he's surpassed Wallstedt. To deny that is foolish.
