To add here- would this trade have been received better if it was for yegor and a second? That is essentially what we got considering conroy wanted to draft suniev in the second round

If they got a 2nd they would probably be telling us they wanted to draft that guy in the 1st round. So ya it's still a late 3rd no matter how you spin it.

Or maybe they legitimately valued him as a 2nd round pick. They had a name plate for him and were exploring trading up to get another 2nd to get him.
EDIT: Not necessary

He is miserable. But he isn’t wrong on the take. The trade was for a third rounder. Sure it was a deep draft, but we don’t need to do extra mental gymnastics to make it better. Value was and is fine.

The Flames would've probably used New Jersey's 58th to have taken Suniev then. Same result.

To be fair the Flames seem to have nameplates for everyone when the draft them. A little hyperbole but they're top notch when it comes to this.

I didn't think they had one for Morin did they? I might be wrong.

yeah, it did seem they were prepared to take Suniev at 48, but were surprised Morin was still there and made the snap decision to take him instead, hence no nameplate for Morin but one for Suniev. Worked out brilliantly in the end, with Suniev still being there at 80.

Boy you are miserable.
Yeah, except we hear such statements every year. I believe Conroy was saying how he thought Jack Beck would've been a 2nd round pick if not for COVID. Jankowski was supposed to become a 1st line center etc.

The point is that the scouts, and management always get overly excited, and they always claim to get their guy, and a couple of gems along the way. I mean when was the last time we heard something along the lines of: "we really missed out on *insert name*"? We hear those stories 5-10 years after the draft, but never on draft day.

I don't think it makes a guy miserable to not buy into the mental gymnastics of we actually traded Toffoli for a 2nd instead of a 3rd. For me, the fact that fans need to try and spin the trade in a favorable manner shows it wasn't a very good trade for the organization. That said, I've moved on and hope both the players we got have success.

I am liking every single pick in this draft. Very happy with Conroy and Co.‘s gameplan.

Smith for a 2024 3rd (likely very late 3rd)
Duclair for a 2025 5th + Lorentz

Obviously TT is coming off a better season, but I suspect over the last 6 years you could rank Smith/Duclair/TT in each possible permutation.

For me, this just shows that fans have deep-seated insecurities about their team. Fans trying to spin trades favorably has no bearing on whether the trade was good or not.

Suniev's tape is pretty exciting, he just oozes out elite potential.

I don't find his skating to be as bad as everyone makes it out to be either.

I don't expect we will see him improve on that in his time here and don't think that is a negative spin, just the reality of guys with his age/experience.
What exactly do you think Toffoli is? Were we going to trade him for a first line superstar?

What?

Never said anything close to that. I said the deal was likely close to fair value or fair value but I prefer a draft pick over Sharangovich.

Well I’m hindsight this trade was amazing given what has transpired over the last week. Doesn’t make me optimistic for Hanifin and Lindholm

Hanafin and Lindholm value will be highest near deadline. Teams can afford more cap at that point. And certain teams will get a frenzy of thinking one more chip will put them over the top.

This trade is rock solid. I'm pumped to see how Sharangovich fares with whatever finished product Conroy and company ices next season.

I like this thinking as well.
