"Better than 50/50" could be a good future title for E=NG when they leave

You know it is silly season when they are calling odds on extensions that will happen two years from now.

Not really when it comes to Edmonton.
I think back to the Nurse contract. They signed him after the Bubble-Season despite his numbers being completely out of whack and they still had another year to see how those would translate to a regular season.
But they did it anyways and its working out well...

The Hockey News on the Oilers prospects:
https://thehockeynews.com/news/2023-...dmonton-oilers
Quote:
STRENGTHS
The Oilers really don’t have a strength, as they have one of the most barren pipelines in hockey at the moment.
|
Quote:
WEAKNESSES
Where do we start? Their center depth is underwhelming as Tullio and Jayden Grubbe likely profile to the wing, essentially leaving them with no centers in the system. The wings aren’t strong, but they may have a few contributors. The blueline is a mess. Akey helps, but the Oilers have no one of prominence behind him. Philip Broberg and Evan Bouchard are still young, which helps, but they need an infusion of defensive talent as soon as possible.

Oil have to be in full Win Now mode until the Draisaitl contract is up. I can imagine they will hemorrhage more picks at the deadline hoping to make another trip to the conference finals.

The Oilers are not decimating their farm system in order to try to win a cup, They are trying to be in a position to get more of those sweet #1 picks the moment Drai and McDavid decide to leave

This off season has been a disaster for the Oilers. They have been ranked having the worst prospect pool in the league and are short a 3rd and 4th in next draft. They really do not have much in value to trade in picks and prospects at the deadline. Players were being given away this off season, but with the Bouchard contract talks not going anywhere they are stuck not doing anything going into the last year where they don't have to worry about extending either of their big 2.
Trade deadline is going to be more expensive to add and they probably have enough value in picks and prospects to make 1 decent trade and probably leave themselves with 1 pick in the top 4 rounds next year.
Vegas is the champs. LA got better especially as their kids prgress. Colorado lost Compher but added Ry Jo and Colton and have kids that could get alot better.
Stars improved too. All the best teams in the West have done more than the Oilers and have better picks/prospect pools to use as trade bait or improve from within.
I'm surprised Holland still has a job

As soon as you mention 50/50 to an Oiler fan they immediately gaze off into the distance dreaming of all you can eat buffets and unlimited days at the West Ed waterpark.

50/50 are the odds when an Oiler fan’s wife and the family dog go two on one in the corner after a bone.

Isn't Holland Jr. involved in the team now too?
Ken might not be a good GM but he's a smart guy. He used his former Red Wings hype to worm himself into that organization and jumped on the nepotism train to ensure his family could get in on those suckers' dollars too.
An intelligent parasite.

Ken just has to feed them lines like "so after the cup parade" every so often, and those fools will gobble it right up.
He's studied their language and self-felating ways.

That or they're re-signed for cap structure crippling price tags and the team continues to be "McDrai and some guys" except they slowly decline in their ability boon the awful derpth over time, and eventually are dealt for diminished returns when they're not as good, with still 0 cups to their names.

They both walk for sure, but
Draisiatl @ 8x14 and then Mcdavid @ 8x17 would be fun to watch the Coilers try to do roster Gymnastics to even be competitive.

And in the back half it would be like the Flames leaning on past-prime Iggy for some kind of unrealistic run except x2.
