With no arbitration rights last year & giving the Oilers a $100,000 bargain, it’s unlikely his camp is in a mood to focus on doing what’s best for the Oilers cap.
Quote:
The freshly-turned 23-year-old turned heads in 2021-22 with a splendid rookie season. Yet after a summer-long wait he has signed an extension that is closer to the NHL minimum of $750,000 than to the qualifying offer he received that was in the range of $875,000.
The two sides waited it out for weeks/months as GM Ken Holland explored other options to open up sufficient cap space to pursue a multi-year extension for the speedy young forward, but with on-ice sessions beginning today that time has run out. The fallback is a simple one-year extension at the extreme bargain rate of $798,000 that will see McLeod join his teammates right on schedule.

Yamamoto worked out so well, I think they should do the same.
Quote:
(He) compared his situation with that of teammate Kailer Yamamoto one year ago. His own ELC expired, Yamamoto signed at a bargain rate for a one-year bridge that he significantly outperformed. He was rewarded this past summer with a two-year deal at a relatively handsome rate of $3.1 million.

In 1881 and 1882, Winnipeg went mad over a prairie land boom. At first, town lots in Winnipeg itself went up to prices they would not see again for nearly a century. Then the boom spread to lots in other railway towns in Manitoba – Brandon, Minnedosa, Portage la Prairie, Emerson. The townsites became more and more remote, more and more imaginary, and the prices kept getting sillier.
Everyone was in on the speculative madness. A newly-built church sold its land and building for a massive profit. Even little girls were trading pretend lots for their dollhouses.
Finally, in April, 1882, town lots in Edmonton went on sale. The first day, a few diehard speculators snapped them up. When they tried to sell those lots at a profit, they found no takers at any price. The bottom fell out of the market, and the boom was over.
The stink of Edmonton's No-Goodness was not only detectable in Winnipeg, it wrecked the local economy there.

Nothing like being hamstrung paying huge dollars to ageing assets.

"Better than 50-50". How many teams have lost generational players to free agency? I can't think of any. Gretzky was traded. Lemieux retired a Pen and Crosby will too.
Loserville is about to lose one and also his sidekick, LOL.

I just don't understand what would keep either of them there. Draisaitl in particular has spent his life in America in Prince George and Edmonton. No wonder he's so pissy. If I was that guy I'd be on the first plane to basically anywhere else. But if I was Connor I would have pulled a Lindros, so maybe I'm wrong and they both really love it.
It'd be nice if they both left the conference.

I am amazed that no one has offer sheeted McLeod. He's big, fast, can center the fourth line, and put up maybe 20-30 points. I think he's easily worth a couple million. And if he signed, EDM would be very hard pressed to match.
If we're moning Backlund, we need some bodies that can play up the middle - he's a great option (not saying he's a Backlund replacement - he isn't - just saying he's a useful 4th line C)

McLeod filed for arbitration, so he cannot be given an offer sheet

I suppose if you interpret 50/50 as either they will/or they won't, you could make that argument. But only to another Oiler fan.
