Yeah, I was thinking something along the same lines.
Now, I'll begin this by professing 0 knowledge of Drag and/or what it entails.
But isnt 'Drag' men dressing up like provocative women?
I dont think thats what these guys reading books to children are dressing up as, granted I could be completely wrong.

That onus is not on the organizers of this event. That’s blaming the victim.
Many of these events are called “Reading with Royalty” or something similar. The protesters still target them.

I’m 50/50 I think when people showed up and saw Men dressed as princesses the outrage would be just as bad.

And they’re the #######s.
“Dress up story time” is the most non-controversial, most inclusive thing you could call this - “drag queen story hour” generates a particular kind of negative response. (As does “reading with royalty” - synonyms aren’t solutions)
Whereas “Dress Up story hour” invites anyone who would like to come read to the children in costume to do so.
That’s the goal, right? To read to the kids?
So do whatever is necessary to make a welcoming and non-threatening an environment to as many different people as possible.
Don’t make it about anything other than reading to children.
Drag shows are lots of fun - there’s a reason they card you on the way in. Because they’re not appropriate for children who go to the library for story hour.
Everybody likes dress up. These fools will try and make a stink out of anything, so don’t make it harder on yourselves than it has to be.
And this doesn’t have to be. This is dress up at the library in front of a bunch of sleep deprived women and their kids who are far too young to be anything but enthralled by the clothes on a Saturday morning.

They were popular events on their own terms until the bigots showed up. There is no reason for them to appease others. The whole point of them was to showcase LGBTQ themes in a wholesome family setting.

I’m not disagreeing with their merits.
If the name is causing an issue, change the name to something nobody has a problem with, and make the people complaining about it look like bigger fools.
If the outcome is more Libraries saying “this is more hassle than it’s worth, we’re not doing this anymore”, that doesn’t help anyone.

Perhaps the libraries should just remove the books from their collections.
It's not the name of the event that's the issue. You realize these religious zealots won't stop with storytime?

|
No. The goal is to present a comfortable and familiar setting that introduces concepts of queerness to children so as that it becomes normalized. The intent is that children understand it's perfectly acceptable to be different in this and many other types of ways.
Dress up story hour doesn't achieve the same goal when someone is dressed as Spider-Man or Harry Potter.

No. As explained the point is beyond reading to kids.

Well I suppose it's just purely good luck they are not remotely the same, and anyone with any measure of critical thought could separate them...unless, of course, they are just hateful ####heads masking their hate behind props - because let's be honest, that is all children really are to these people.

No they won't. They target these events for a very specific reason.

This is a weird take.

What's the negative response with "Reading with Royalty"? Does it trigger the 'I'm not transphobic, I'm just an anti-monarchist' crowd?

Yeah the ultimate goal of these weirdos is to de-normalize any kind of queerness, full-stop.
We're already seeing it in the US, where gender-affirming care has been scaled-back or banned outright for teenagers in some states, and laws are already being drafted to extend those same bans to adults.
Everything that is being done under the guise of "save the children!" is thinly veiled fascist rhetoric and it's accelerating quickly, because the fascists have realized that if you dress up your opposition as pedophilia, you can appear righteous in your condemnation and violence towards it.

The latest photo shows Calgary MP Jasraj Singh Hallan, the Conservative finance critic, standing with three other men during a pancake breakfast that was open to the public last week as part of the Calgary Stampede.
Two of the men are wearing white T-shirts with black letters that read "leave our kids alone." The shirts also show a smaller, stylized image of a family beneath an umbrella sheltering them from the rainbow of colours associated with LGBTQ Pride flags.

I don't know anything about that MP, but I usually don't take a ton of stock of photos like these. He might be a racist backwards conservative, or he just was ambushed by this group for a photo.
At events like this, politicians will take photos with anyone. Hell, I've seen Justin himself taking random ass selfies at the stampede one year.

The name is not the issue. See here:

Families had gathered inside the Seton library in the southwest part of the city on the last Saturday of the month for an event called Reading with Royalty, during which a drag performer reads stories about acceptance and inclusion. Kids were encouraged to dress up in capes and crowns.
As the event was under way, protesters entered the room, shouting homophobic and transphobic slurs. Police were called, and charged the leader of the protest with what they are calling a hate-motivated crime.

Or he is a public servant that should be aware of who/what he is being photographed with.

Religions have had centuries of being the arbitrator of morals and telling people what they can do, who they can do, and what is and isn't acceptable. They don't know how to live and let live. They are so afraid of losing control over others impotent outrage is all they can express. They need counselling and help.

It’s absurd to think “reading with royalty” is an issue because it’s a bad synonym and “dress up story hour” is not an issue because it’s a good synonym. What are you even saying?

They are welcoming and non-threatening events. The goal is not simply to “read to kids” but to encourage acceptance and understanding so that kids know however they want to express themselves is OK. If boys want to wear nail polish, is it inappropriate to teach them that it’s OK to do that? That’d be a tough argument to make.

There are lots of other readings for that. Go to those.

Actually, it’s because most of them are at bars.
Drag events geared toward being child-friendly or all-ages are purposely not inappropriate for children or all ages.
I would encourage you to actually attend one of these readings and see for yourself (if you have kids, you might even realise it’s not just moms that take their kids to reading time, step up dad!). At the end of the day, showing children (who naturally have a far more fluid and open understanding of gender and gender expression than adults) that you can be whoever you want to be and express yourself however you want to express yourself is fun and healthy and a worthwhile cause.

They are also the people who flip out over covid restrictions saying the government should leave us alone. But we should also ban these things.
