Coyotes terminate Galchenyuk's contract 12 days after signing him

According to the report, Galchenyuk was helped back into the car by a second individual (later identified as his father) and began making erratic movements once inside the car. Galchenyuk told an officer “I will chop all of you f—s” and began to reach under his seat, prompting a warning from the officer.

The officer described a struggle while Galchenyuk was placed under arrest, leading the two officers on the scene to assist in placing him in handcuffs while on the ground.

The detail about his father being there on the scene is interesting.

Galchenyuk told one officer that he’d make one call to Russia and have the officer’s wife and daughter’s kidneys “cut out.”

“He then began to make racially charged slurs toward (the officer), calling him (a racial slur) on numerous occasions.”

From the Standard Player's Contract (SPC):

2. The Player agrees to give his services and to play hockey in all NHL Games, All Star Games, International Hockey Games and Exhibition Games to the best of his ability under the direction and control of the Club in accordance with the provisions hereof.

The Player further agrees,

(e) to conduct himself on and off the rink according to the highest standards of honesty, morality, fair play and sportsmanship, and to refrain from conduct detrimental to the best interest of the Club, the League or professional hockey generally.

14. The Club may also terminate this SPC upon written notice to the Player (but only after obtaining Waivers from all other Clubs) if the Player shall at any time:

(a) fail, refuse, or neglect to obey the Club's rules governing training and conduct of Players, if such failure, refusal or neglect should constitute a material breach of this SPC.

In the event of termination under Paragraph 14(a) or (b) the Player shall only be entitled to compensation due to him to the earlier of the date such notice is personally delivered to him or the date such notice is e-mailed to him.

The gist is if you do something so bad that it's considered "conduct detrimental," the team has the right to offer your contract on unconditional waivers to anyone else, and if you're not claimed then they can unilaterally terminate the contract. They only owe whatever the contract says you're owed up until the exact date they give you notice that your contract is being terminated.

In this case, because Galchenyuk's contract was terminated before the season began and he wasn't being paid any bonuses up-front, the Coyotes owe him nothing. Nor will the Coyotes carry any dead cap space for "buying him out"; this isn't a buy-out, it's a termination of his contract. After the wavier period, once notice has been served, Galchenyuk immediately becomes a UFA.

I'm making a total assumption, as I haven't read through any of the reports on the incident. Based on the stop being associated with running over a sign I automatically assumed that he was drinking and driving.

Its not that though, its the nature of his comments. Sure, he threatened to murder a Police Officer and his family.

At the end of the day though, I think it demonstrates that this guy might be a little unhinged.
