Danielle Smith may claim she's got LGBTQ family members/friends, but when push comes to shove, she's a bystander and not an ally.

Poilievre's got a gay dad FFS. He just smiled and posed.

Can't understand it.

Hard to fathom isn’t it? Does the pursuit of power and the need to dog whistle to core supporters trump everything?

Both of them in a real world should probably fire their handlers, how the heck that picture even gets taken is beyond me. Sadly I fear though that there’s some pride in the we will show those wokesters and are almost hoping for it to blow up.

At the end of the day it’s a classless, hateful shirt that has no business being proudly posed with leadership of our nation, but there it is for all to see.

There's a disturbing trend that sees any civil rights as being "woke."

My god are we Canadians a stupid bunch. Thankfully we are blessed with an abundance of natural resources and next door to the worlds larges economic powerhouse for trade. We couldn't cut it as a nation without those things to the same extent we do.

Watching the news and seeing this story play out is embarrassing for the media and for everybody who's ultra concerned with why people at a public event are taking photos with people wearing a potentially offensive shirt. News flash, plenty of people have stupid shirts and clothing styles, are we suppose to be issuing trigger warnings for all the softies here? Do we want our political leaders having to now send out press releases that "insert leader does not agree with this person's cause"

In other countries, the media tries to do the job of what's going on with the money, who's benefiting? Where's the corruption? What's happening with the government? You know, holding people to account about the things that really matter?

Instead people are losing their minds about some shirt on some guy next to a Premier and a federal party leader. This is politics I guess. That's the story that leads headlines.

I guess the story that Calgary and Alberta used to be governed by 2 rumored gay men at the same time probably doesn't attract as much attention I guess.

According to the comments on this article helping men to understand what women go through during menstrual pain is woke. It's like they think any kind of empathy is bad.

Quite the take, if two gay men were “rumoured” and weren’t out in the open about it that might tell you a little bit about the culture still, no?

Lots to take issue with the shirt, the fact that someone is so emboldened to show up at the conservative functions tells you about the acceptance they feel in that place with beliefs like that. They know it’s ok there, that they won’t be called out for it and are even proud enough to get pictures with the leaders.

As for the leaders themselves, of course they need to now speak out even though too late. It should never happen, the fact it did tells a story.

Because that's not a story? Explain why that's a story please. Go ahead.

People care because the priemer should in no way have a picture taken standing next to a bigot, particularity given the glaring obvious issues her government and caucus have with rights. Would a swastika shirt be fine for you, too? Should we not expect better judgment form our leaders? This may not be a scandal, but it's another data point in the many showing Smith to be unable to make wise choices. And if she did it knowingly as a dog whistle to her peeps? That's far worse. I'll leave it to you to puzzle out why.

Swastika's are not the same thing as dumb t-shirts, context matters. Although I don't like him, in a hypothetical scenario Trudeau would probably have taken the picture in a similar format. Keep in mind that the security clearance for a PM is different but without a doubt, Trudeau has taken selfies with suspect characters and their clothing and that's fine. It's a random picture, not endorsing everything everybody says or wears.

Remember some of the conservative and liberal outrage when Trudeau was photobombing weddings, being shirtless etc? Small time potatoes but people get worked up over it. No reason to.

Stephen Harper, a noted Flames and Leafs fan would never be photographed wearing his team's jerseys for fear of offending other fan bases. He wore team Canada. Personally a big fan of his. Trudeau, I admire for having the gut's to proudly wear his Hab's jersey as he's a fan. Not worried about offending other's.

People shouldn't be worked up over the little things like a t-shirt that guy was wearing. Context matters and being even across the board is also important too. If another politician took the same picture, it's ok too. It's a picture, not an endorsement

I think most people understand that Smith may not have seen the tshirt before the picture. The issue is that the UCP continues to give idiots like that guy a voice. It’s not some crazy, radical opinion to think that our leaders should stand up for the equality of our people.

The shirt would be a non-story with most Liberal or NDP candidates. UCP supporters literally voted in someone who compared trans kids to crap, so it isn't really a stretch to draw conclusions from taking a picture with that guy. They can always say no lol

Team jerseys or not wearing a shirt at all do not in any way equate with a shirt like this. This is a real issue that continues to send strong messages that there is a home for this in conservative circles. Until the leaders and their staff start to take this seriously it will remain an issue. All signs point to not really wanting to deal with it.
