We want to keep spots open, we want the young guys to see there are spots for them to step up and take. So we are not making moves just to make moves.
I definitely like what Conroy is saying here.

I'm fine not getting UFAs.
I dont think the flames are in a position to go big UFA hunting. I dont think they will be for a few years.
This includes lindholm unless he's willing to take an extreme value contract

Sounds good to me. Roster additions will naturally occur through the trades as well, no need to go anywhere near the UFA pool.

Yep, it's time for this approach. Maybe a little past the time. I am glad Conroy showing patience. As a first time GM being handed the keys, it would be tempting to go nuts a little, but he is being wise IMO.
It's time to think long term here. I am looking forward to seeing a lot of hungry young players giving it there all next season.

No John Klingberg, then? He would have looked interesting opposite Zadorov

I’d rather make no moves than panic/desperation moves. We are likely to create more problems than we would solve by going big in free agency. Let’s just stay patient and see how things develop.

Nobody signed today was a desperate need for the Flames.
Sprong maybe? He'd fit a need and the money was fine, otherwise nothing to panic about really.

Ditto. I mean, just browse the front page, most of these deals are either nothingburgers or complete nonsense (*cough* Reaves *cough*)

Give the space to the kids and let them develop.

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I would have liked to at least see some movement or maybe SOME interest in movement. It's not like we have a lot of tools in our cupboard, and it seems it wants to get emptier.
I get there are some youngsters champing at the bit, but is that enough? How do we know we have the capability to grow? I mean, Wolf, yeah, but our depth was ranked 25th. I hope my opinion is wrong.

There were a few summers during Treliving's tenure when people wanted to hear exactly this from the GM.
Better late than never I suppose.

Being hesitant to sign free agents isn’t just about letting prospects move up…it’s really about getting out of salary cap jail. We can’t be a mediocre (and declining) cap team forever. If there is a great fit with what we are trying to accomplish and comes at a price that works, Conny will definitely try to sign the player. I’m sure that he was working the phones but we need to be really selective about who we sign.
Free agent frenzy day signings seem to become boat anchors more often than not. The free agent class this year was particularly weak too.

Often at a better rate than the better teams. Despite its talent pool LA is being led not by their recent draft picks.

You have to test it at some point. For too long we have been giving spots to older slower guys. Lets show the you guys were are serious about homegrown talent, and if it comes up short we will make the necessary improvements.

I love this approach. This is the worst time of the year as a fan IMO as this is the time where teams make mistakes and players get overpaid.

He’s a UFA so you don’t need to acquire him. He had surgery and is out 4-6 months so I don’t think anyone will sign him until after the season starts.
