Pittsburgh is making the most sense. Especially if Buffalo is lowballing. And any package with Florida featuring duclair as the centerpiece is a non starter. And Boston may have the want but not the pieces.
Hanifin fits what they are looking for (lhd to play with letang). Dubas can be a bit of a wildcard when it comes to trades. Probably has to move out money (granlund). But might want to put his stamp on the team. And hanifin seems open to extending, which probably eases any pain in giving up valuable assets.

Forget Jack Quinn in a trade for Hanifin for now. Elliot Friedman just said he injured his Achilles and will be out for 4-6 months.

Okay but why does Pittsburgh make sense for Calgary? I can’t think of even 2 desirable asset. Even Yager I’m not much of a fan of.

I wouldn’t forget Quinn just because of an injury.
As long as I knew he would recover fully.

They do have some young pieces that might be of interest (would be a future based trade)
Owen Pickering
PO Joseph
Ty Smith
Sam Poulin (buddies with Pelletier IIRC)
Alex Nylander (PPG in AHL, might be ready for big time)
Need a G too - so could be a spot for Vladar.

Those are some low quality pieces from Pittsburgh. Best piece is Pickering and I'm not sure what excitement there is over him. I don't think those get you into a conversation for a top four defenseman. Those are more along the lines of dufus-for-dufus deals and moving underachieving prospects around for similar prospects. I mean Alex Nylander is 25 and is still a tweener. I don't see a fit with Pittsburgh unless Conroy gets taken to the woodshed.

With that type of offer from Buffalo the correct reply from Conroy should have been a counter proposal of a 7th for Alex Tuch.
Since, you know, that is what we are doing apparently, wasting each other’s time.

Imagine saying to Conroy with a straight face that Hanifin and Toffoli basically have the same value.

Got to thinking and it feels like the rangers could be a decent fit for Hanifin.
They have the need (Hanifin would be an upgrade over Miller) they have the peices to get it done and we could retain to make it work for them Cap wise.

That’s less value than the Toffoli trade in my opinion lol

That's true. Worse pick by a few spots, and a pending UFA in 2024 that only scores on the PP.

The problem right now is everyone's bad deals are coming home to roost and their is no liquidity which makes "assets" worthless.
Its like trying to sell a car when everyone's credit is maxed out, what happens in those markets is great for buyers and terrible for sellers.
Yet another valuable lesson learned by our new management, you want draft capital? Plan ahead. You want to unload guys who don't want to be here in this type of market be prepared to give them away or sit them down and have an honest discussion. These players are starting to realize the same, "I don't want to be here, wait a minute, nobody wants me either?"

That and, stop ####ing giving NMC and NTC out like candy to save a buck. You want flexibility? Give yourself flexibility.

That kinda opens an opportunity that wouldn’t exist if he was healthy. They’ll want to make the playoffs. If he was healthy, they’d have him slotted top 6.

Exactly, that should be only allowed on a "franchise player" or a minimum of 2 contracts per team. It disproportionately affects the smaller market teams which the salary cap was supposed to eliminate. It also turns some assets into being worthless.
I had this discussion on another thread, If you want a job where you don't move around pick another profession, this one is only 10 years long on average, go where you are wanted and needed. Things change in a team concept and you may be useful today but you may not fit the teams needs tomorrow, if you always play your ass off there is some team that will need you.

Don't blame the players for asking for something teams are only too willing to give out.
You'll never get that out of the system now.
Just because something is good for teams doesn't make it right.
No free agency was good for teams. It allowed players to be paid less as it reduced artificially the FMV of players, as their only choice was to not play.

Not blaming the players at all, it was shortsighted GM's and ownership trying to save a buck or two, who wouldn't want a NTC or NMC.
It will be a hot button issue in the next lockout whenever that happens.

Patience is a virtue for a GM so I'm hopeful CC sticks to his guns.
But it's also not just Hanifin that is on the table. Decisions need to be made on Backlund, Lindholm potentially, Tanev, Zadorov and probably Vladar.
