Giving my read on the player based on the video I've seen. He gets around because he's a big kid with a long stride, which to me is awkward and not overly fluid. Like I said, reminds me of Monahan. Also didn't see anything that makes me believe he's a good puck handler. Moves the puck quickly but doesn't dangle with it. He's got great size and soft hands. Fills that need.
Last “big” guy flames drafted that worked out well?
It’s a short list if any.
It’s not mad that a big guy got picked, it’s disappointment when higher upside guys were still available, guys who were ranked way higher and who’s
nhl-e/development stats showed way higher promise.
Even the smart analytical guys weren’t fond of this kid.
Are the Flames just smarter than everyone else?
Based on history… I’m not so sure.
He was ranked between. 10 and 20 and they picked him 16
Again go look how accurate past draft rankings have been
It's kinda crazy how this board is automatically angry if a bigger player is picked.
Don’t have an issue myself, don’t know anything about him. Kid had the injury and was in his first year in North America.
If he had played the same number of games as Danielson (68) and produced at the same rate as he did in his 43 games he would have had the following numbers
36 goals - 53 assists for 89 points.
Danielson has 33-45-78
He also would have outproduced Yeager and would have been the fourth highest scoring forward year one draft eligible forward from the WHL in the draft behind Bedard, Benson and Cristall.

I’m not saying draft rankings are accurate and the gospel.
But go watch his game play and tell me his upside is better than those that were still available.
He’s a “safe” pick and was bigger than most kids in the WHL so he was able to put muscle a lot of them just based on size.
His stride is awkward, he’s not fast, he’s not flashy and he doesn’t have a hard shot.
He plays small for his size, there’s just so many things that don’t translate, but hey the flames seem to think he’s the next Rantanen, I’ll happy eat crow if that happens but I’m pretty confident he’s borderline 3rd liner.

Ya most pundits see him as a third liner? Then why have him ranked consistently between 13 and 25 in a super deep draft? Are scouts enamoured with size as well? This kid is going to be damn good

Tkachuk - he's like an inch shorter than Honzek and heftier to boot.
If you are looking for really big guys - Ruzicka is the only one that I can think of that they even drafted recently. The Flames haven't targetted size for quite a while.
