Just like Calgary. After next season, the main roster defensemen left are Mackenzie and Andersson just looking at the existing contracts. That includes Kylington (assuming he returns to hockey).
I think the Flames are in a world of hurt coming if they don't start acting now to find players and lock them up. Even if Poirier can make the jump, our depth is dangerously low.
Calgary is going to need a vet or two.

Flames could move Hanafin ($4.95M) for Duclair ($3M) and Luostarinen ($1.5) and still have some cash buffer.

The Flames will be SUBSTANTIALLY younger next season
if you don't see that you don't want to or aren't paying attention

I am back in the acceptance camp they won't rebuild. Don't love it but might as well enjoy the ride from here on out and hope the retool hits.

Younger is great, but they may also be a lot less skilled

What we can project in age difference (more or less) already for our day to day roster:
Milan Lucic: -35
Trevor Lewis: -36
Tyler Toffoli: -31
Yegor Sharangovich: +25
Walker Duehr: +25
Adam Ruzicka: +24
Net: 28 Years younger.

It's not exactly a new direction. Quite a few of us knew they weren't rebuilding.

I’d argue the opposite. Having a system that promotes skill and creativity and not just throwing pucks on net might show we have more skill than we actually may have thought

Yes the new coach and a new system will help. But just getting younger is not the be all and end all. Getting younger players with less skill doesn't do it.

Maybe we should wait and see how the new coaching staff actually does before anointing this new system pumping career 30 point players into top line snipers. Glen Gulutzan was the hip new thing around here for one summer as well.
The team on paper is going to be substantially worse, that much is practically a given.

We've had a number of years where in the summer we heard how great we looked on paper, and it hasn't panned out.
I'm starting to think "on paper" means pretty much nothing.
I just hope they're more fun to watch, win or lose. Give people a reason to cheer for them other than it's what we do every year.

Thus far I will argue just as skilled, more unified, faster, younger and hungrier. We will have to wait and see.

So get older and more skilled players? You won't get younger and more skilled players by trading the likes of the Flames UFAs unless there is a Tkachuk level talent out there demanding a trade to Calgary lol

I actually said that the Flames always seem to drop a big turd when they are hyped at the start of the season. It goes goes back to at least the Iggy era. Might be longer then that but I wasn't around

Yep, better success when it hasn't been expected for sure.

Why don’t we wait and see what happens first?

You are assuming Toffoli would have another career season
he is the only skill lost at the moment
The fourth line will have far more skill on it

this is very true
the summer's before the last 2 division titles this was supposedly a bottom 5 team according to many CPers...2nd overall one of those years
