I get that when we’re spending other people’s money it’s easy to be flippant about it. However, this is real money. And the people who are wealthy enough to own the flames didn’t get their wealth because they did things that didn’t make financial sense.

If the owners agree to retain I hope it moves the needle and results in a quicker turnaround than other teams rebuilds retools or whatever the description of the day is.

If they do they’ve stepped up yet again to try and make the team better. If they choose not to I wouldn’t blame them. It’s a business and it’s their money.

Doesn’t make them bad. Doesn’t mean they don’t want the Flames to win.
The thing is ownership has proven they have no problem spending to the cap and have done so for many years now.

However with the current team makeup they're not true contenders and adding mid tier talent to get to the cap won't get them there anyways. It would be much smarter of ownership to recognize this and retain $$ on trades to get better returns which will allow the team to get to a contender stage quicker than to simply spend on player salaries and get the same mediocre results year over year.

Basically still spending the same amount but in a smarter way by retaining money than spending it to max out cap space.

Do you not see what I am saying here man.
That's right and like I said at the end of my post I am confident of that take. Do you think Conroy was lying when he said he won't let his key UFA's walk as free agents? That his statement about learning from the Gaudreau situation is just smoke and mirrors? You really think there is any chance he uses Hanifin and Lindholm as pure rentals if they are not dealt before the trade deadline? I am confident in saying that won't happen, feel free to lynch the hell out of me if I am wrong on that.

To be fair, Zadorov I would do.

Duclair and Huberdeau would boost each other's value and you can flip Duclair at the deadline if you're not playoff bound.

Hanifin for a roster player and a 2nd or 3rd. That pick acquires Duclair. I wouldn’t be surprised if it the third they just picked up as well

I’ll happily eat crow. My complaining is pretty much out of my system. I just got my hopes for an actual rebuild. Kudos to you if you have that faith still!

If Conroy does decide to go the route of trading Lindholm for picks, I hope a team is smart enough to step up and make the trade. This isn’t just me as a flames fan saying this… I think a legit contender would be smart to make a big futures trade for Lindholm.

Even a team like Pittsburgh who you could argue is not a true contender right now would be smart step up IMO. If the flames took salary back (like Granlund for example) or retained salary on Lindholm (or both), and the penguins trade 14th overall for Lindholm, I think it sets them up to do really well in the east. And trading their 2023 first round pick now leaves them open to trade their 2024 first round pick at the TDL for even more help if they really wanted to go all in and give the Crosby/Malkin/Letsng group one last shot. I seriously doubt any player that the penguins draft tomorrow will be a contributor to their current core… and if they truly believe their core deserves one more shot, why not give them the best chance? A full year of Lindholm does exactly that.

I imagine most teams are thinking they can wait out Conroy and offer up their 2024 first instead… which could be true. But using up that 2024 first means you’ll have one less asset at the TDL that you can use to add something more if your team looks primed for a run.

Obviously so want something like this to happen for the flames but I also think he’s worth it for a team that wants to go all in.

Conroy implied they wanted to get more picks and use them.

I just don't see them turning around and sending picks out for a patchwork team.

If it's too difficult to decide on Lindholm and Hanifin today then look at moving the other expiring pieces.

Sounds like there is a market for Zadorov as well.

Market for Zadorov? Did you hear/read something? I’d love to see the Flames get something for him.

Friedman mentioned his name is out there at the draft. I think big heavy defensemen are in style after the Vegas cup win so hopefully Conny can bounce back with a decent trade there.

I would rather we keep Zadorov. He likes being in Calgary and he is just hitting his peak. I know the rebuild scorched Earth crowd wants to deal all the upcoming UFA's but I don't think that will happen.

Ya, if they trade another Dman it should be Hanifin and Tanev..
