Something tells me we are in for “Brad Treliving trade deadline” levels of disappointment tomorrow. Conroy learned from him so I’m wondering if he goes in with the mindset of we don’t have to trade any of these signed guys tomorrow if the offer isn’t there
We might see him be patient and pull a Joe Sakic and trade your Duchene’s during the first half of the regular season

Also this whole rookie GM angle is overplayed to me.
Conroy has been part of hockey operations since 2010 and assistant GM since 2014. He has relationships with all the other GMs for sure.
Them treating him like his some idiot and just lowballing isn't going to be happening because he's a rookie GM.

Good for Connie. Stand your ground and set a precedent.
I sure don’t envy him. Having one of these guys to deal would be one thing. 3-4 is a really tough spot.

No he can also counteroffer lousy offers to set expectations and start a dialogue.
But failing that, yeah, agree. You gotta ask for stuff. Go in with higher asks than you would be happy with settling on expecting the counter to your counter (or 2-3 rounds of that). Be prepared to eat contracts or share on some.
Tough to imagine people not being willing to make decent offers on these players.

I largely agree, but if we get screwed by a soft market this is going to suck.

Most GM's will have discussions and most GM's will know who they are getting for probably at least the top 10 picks. Maybe Lindholm gets moved for a first from a team that didn't get the guy they wanted...but it won't be top 10.
We will not get a high end already drafted prospect from anyone.

Patience is key. Conroy needs to hold the line until the right offer comes.

I don't the lowballs are because of Conroy.
They're because teams see the Flames situation of being backed into a corner. They're preying on a wounded animal and I'm glad Conroy isn't giving in easily.
What a difficult start to his job.

But it is reported that Conroy is getting lowballed.
And Briere didn't help the situation by giving the Blues a legit and big second line centre with a reasonable cap hit for next to nothing.

It's just narrative building to excuse potential inaction.
I hope Conroy and team deliver. The team needs it.
The way Steinberg was just talking, Lindholm isn't on the trade market at all. They're still waiting for direction from the player...which I think is just stupid.

Nothing to do with him being a rookie. It's all because other GM's have options.
Hayes just went for a 6th and St Louis got him at 3 years at $3.5 mil.
I like Backlund more, but what does this make him worth if guys like Hayes are going for a 6th. 3rd?
Patience might be needed here and some teams might be calling later in summer but the trades right now aren't looking good for teams selling.

If anything this is my worry too.
Hayes at 50% retained only returning a 6th scares me.
But then the Dubois and Newhook returns weren't terrible, and Dubois should be a better comparable to a Hanifin or Lindholm like deal.

That has nothing to do with him being a rookie though.
If anything it's the market and how cap crunched teams are that are causing the soft offers. That and not being proactive last deadline to move a couple of these guys when the market was hot was also a mistake, because now GMs see 7 ufas and know the Flames are in a tough spot.
But it's also why retention should be a tool the Flames are heavily leveraging here, they need to open their market up to as many teams as possible including those cap crunched teams.

More the players have 1 year on expiring contracts.
Speculation is some or all won't resign,
Why offer something over-whelming when they can sign them on July 1 2024.

Set a high bar and don't waver.
Let the dry UFA market and limited options drive up desperation and call their bluff.
No JBo-like returns.

How are the Flames "backed into a corner"? Is Pittsburgh too? Toronto? Washington? Winnipeg?
It's not even draft day yet.
