Nope, they won't withhold anything for excitement, that's silly. And even if they wanted to the chances of keeping a major trade under wraps for excitement with all the people involved and media circling is next to nil. If anything is withheld/held up it's due to ability to sign new contracts for 2024 UFA's involved in trades.

2023/2024 Trade Rumors and Speculation thread
Would these potential trades for Hanifin, Lindholm, Toffoli and Backlund be too little/too much of a return for the flames?
Trade #1
To Buffalo:
Hanifin
To Calgary:
13th overall
39th overall
Trade #2
To Pittsburgh:
Lindholm
To Calgary:
Michael Granlund (cap dump)
14th overall
Lottery protected 1st round pick in either 2024 or 2025 - Pittsburgh decides just before the 2024 trade deadline which pick they want to give up. No matter what year they select, it is still lottery protected and will be deferred by a year if that pick ends up in the top 3 of the draft (therefore, the pick could potentially end up being a 2026 first round pick if Pittsburgh won the draft lottery in 2025).
Trade#3:
To New York:
Toffoli (50% retained)
To Calgary:
23rd overall
Trade#4:
To Carolina:
Backlund (50% retained)
To Calgary:
30th overall
62nd overall
The flames would get to pick 13th, 14th, 16th, 23rd and 30th overall with these trades. A massive draft position to be in. This would also give them the draft capital to trade up into the top ten if they wanted to (though I think I would prefer to just make all the picks).
It’s a dream scenario if it is a full on rebuild IMO. Obviously it takes these teams wanting these players enough to give up first round picks but I don’t think any of these trades are too out there as far as cost to those teams. With the exception of the Hanifin trade, every team is getting cap relief - Pittsburgh dumps Granlund; New York and Carolina receive salary retention on Toffoli and Backlund, respectively.
The biggest risk is to the flames in these trades IMO because they are getting nothing but picks - or magic beans as some like to call them. Lots of those picks could bust (see Boston in 2015). I would still do these trades though because I would love to see that kind of excitement for the flames fan base watching the draft after the rough year it has been.

Shane Wright has plenty of time to pop. I would trade Lindholm for him in a heartbeat.

He is still only 19 till half way into next season.. He is still an absolute stud prospect and if he's available the Flames need to be all over that.

It was a lofty expectations to expect him to jump from junior right to the NHL. Seattle did the right thing by sending him back to junior, but I am pretty optimistic he is still on the right track.

Ya not sold on 1st rounders. Would want some prospects that are projecting well. I mean wow 8 picks in 2013 and 3 first rounders. We thankfully got one star player.
SEAN MONAHAN (C) Drafted: 1st round (6th overall) ...
EMILE POIRIER (LW) Drafted: 1st round (22nd overall) ...
MORGAN KLIMCHUK (LW) Drafted: 1st round (28th overall) ...
KEEGAN KANZIG (D) ...
ERIC ROY (D) ...
TIM HARRISON (C) ...
RUSHAN RAFIKOV (D) ...
JOHN GILMOUR (D)
In fact look at the Leafs in 89 ouch!! 3, 21 and 21.

That’s true. There’s always that risk with picks. If the flames picked 5 times in the first round, a good outcome from it would be 2 of those picks turning into impact players in the NHL.
However, when you look back at the 2013 draft, it really was a top-heavy draft. MacKinnon, Barkov, Lindholm, Monahan and Horvat were by far the best players to come out of that draft. Besides them, there was a lot of busts and a few “meh” players. I don’t know how this draft projects compared to the 2013 draft but most people consider the 2023 draft to be very skilled and deep compared to others.
If the flames were picking 3 times in the first round of 2015 draft, for example, they would have had a better chance of picking more impact players. Rantanen, Crouse, Gurianov, DeBrusk, Barzal, Connor and Chabot all went between picks 10 and 18. And lots of other great players were picked outside the top 20 in that draft.
It’s entirely dependent on how you assess the strength of this draft and how much you trust the current scouting staff to make their picks. Boston had 3 picks in a row (13 to 15) in that 2015 draft and missed big on 2 of them. Better players were picked just before and just after those Boston picks so their scouting staff really dropped the ball.
You’re definitely right that having young prospects already showing proper development is ideal to acquire in these trades… but it might diminish the chances of getting these trades done at this draft. For example, if the flames try to get a top 5 prospect from Buffalo, they may not be willing to trade that 13th overall pick.

That is nothing but a scorched earth approach because very few of the players on the roster today will be around or viable when these new picks finally pop. Better to target players already drafted and have had some development time so you know what you’re getting. Not as sexy and exciting as the unknown, but a better approach to retooling.

...wasted...? Those two single handedly wasted the Flames. I have never seen an exodus of players like we are seeing here of players that don't want to play with these donkeys.
Sutter was the rot...except 2 weeks after he gets skidded...half the team of long term players still wants to leave. That should tell you everything you need to know about "wasted"...

I think your undervaluing how good this draft is. Anyone picked in the top 25 pretty much instantly becomes out best prospect. Guys like honzek, heidt, richie, are always in the 20 to 30 range and all of them have the skills to be top liners. Some if the guys between 10 and 20 would be top five picks in a lot of years. Someone mentioned in another thread last years top five would be in the teens this year and i believe it.

I think if you look back at the Flames drafting track record I wouldn’t put all my chips on trading players for draft picks only.
Flames hit percentage in the draft isn’t that good and you need someone to actually play. Unless you want to watch a last place team for a long time.
Who is currently on the team that the Flames drafted in the first two rounds. Backlund, Anderson, Dube? They are good players but probably not the calibre required to carry a team. The rest came through trades or free agent pick ups.
Of their past high draft picks Bennet was a supporting cast player, Monahan was a good player but injuries caught up with him and Tkachuk left for greener pastures. Of the three Tkachuk was probably the guy you could build a championship team around. So one player out of how many picks. The odds aren’t that high. Even for early picks in the first round. The draft is a crapshoot.
I get the infatuation with high draft picks but if the Flames are rebuilding their roster I think it’s going to be via a combination of drafting as well as trades and free agents for the immediate future.
Conroy is going to have his work cut out for him. Pretty much getting thrown into the fire right off the bat. The next month has the potential to set the course for the Flames for the next number of years. Good or bad.

Guys want to leave for different reasons. Coaches, family, Canada, chasing a cup to name a few.
While Kadri I think can be a bit divisive, there's been zero information that those 2 guys are the cause of players wanting out. Any suggestion of that is complete bunk.

Looked like his teammates in Colorado had a lot of respect for him. I can’t see how that would not be the case here.
