It’s not the players. There is a real backlash that is having real financial implications for companies, primarily happening in America (see Target and Bud Light). This is the NHL protecting their bottom line by avoiding controversial subjects all together.

Whether or not you think this is a good move is entirely up to you to decide (I personally didn’t have any issues with any of the themed jerseys and thought they were good fundraisers, and I hope they can find other ways to fundraiser on these theme nights). I’m just stating that I don’t think it’s the players influencing this.

it's obvious why they did this and it's really sad.

The NHL hates the troops... and Chinese people... and people with cancer.

Cop out to the far right. Sad that it came to that but at least the NHL didn't just leave pride as a special night with no jersey or something

Seeing the victory lap by the blue check crew over wokeness was predictable.

The Target/Bud light "losses" story is just simply not rooted in reality. Yes, their market cap went down, but that doesn't reflect a slow-down in sales the right-wingers think it does. ABEV's market cap is over $50B this week, 'recouping' and surpassing those so-called losses. Target is down, but CPG is all over the place right now. Correlation is not causation.

As Mrs. Slocombe would say: "Weak as water." regarding the NHL BoG

That'll be next.

You capitulate to bigotry once, they'll demand more.

I mean, Bud Light losses are absolutely a real thing. They haven't reported financial results that include the boycott period yet, but industry reports are of sales declines in the 20-25% range year over year. CNN seems unlikely to exaggerate to support a far right cause...

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn...ate/index.html

The US entity has the ticker BUD and has a $112 billion market cap, down roughly $20 billion from when the controversy broke.

Right and wrong are independent of financial cost, but I can understand why the NHL is scared of this.

Edited to add: you quoted the market cap of Ambev, which sells beer in Canada and South America, markets that haven't had nearly the same impact from the boycott. This is a US issue, BUD is the correct issue to look at

But who am I supposed to get my moral cues from without cynical corporate moral pandering? I'm really going to miss how they made me feel good about myself without me having to actually do anything.

The sarcasm doesn’t really play the way you think it does when it’s coming from someone who got a timeout for one of the multiple times he expressed his transphobic views.

Maybe take a lap.

I recently attended a SF Giants game and it turned out to be Pride Night. The players wore rainbow logos, a drag queen threw the opening pitch, there was a drag queen competition, the local gay softball league was represented, and the kiss cam only showed same sex couples.

The game itself sucked by the pride stuff was a lot of fun and the crowd was really into it, including a ton of rainbow merch being purchased. Shame the angry reactions of a few people will ruin fun inclusive events like this going forward.

Why can't we have nice things?

An unintended benefit was seeing who wouldn't participate and cheering against them.

As I assume this is related to the pride nights around the league, Brian Burke put it perfectly. This isn’t about changing anyone’s beliefs or challenging religious or cultural standards but rather promoting a message of inclusivity. It was a simple message saying that hockey is for everyone and all our welcome to watch the game regardless of sexual orientation. You would think that a simple message like that would garner full support. The fact that they are cancelling these nights is such a joke.

They were all cool. Pride Night, Indigenous Night, Lunar New Year, Hockey Fights Cancer. I'm sure I'm forgetting some others. Why can't we just celebrate that stuff? You don't have to be a part of the group to celebrate it and see some really cool jersey designs on the ice in warmup.

League is clearly soft and afraid to stand for anything.

Cater to the entitled millonaires over principles and values that make the world a better place.

Well done gents.

It's a shame. The Flames were one of the early NHL adopters of Pride initiatives and Pride Tape got its start in Alberta.
