Realistically because nothing would be standing in the way of the young guys, the Flames could have their rebuild done in literally two seasons.
|
REal question is:
1. Does Conroy have the balls to go full Tampa Rays mode?
2. Does any first time GM have the latitude to do this in the first place?
Time will tell. But Conroy needs a vision. Trying to cobble together a contender this year should be off the table and will likely be disastrous long term. But a first time GM might fall into this trap.
Hopefully he learned what not to do from his predecessor.

These guys are doing the Flames a huge favour long term by making their intentions known right now
Now they can cash in on the best draft since the McDavid one
Ownership might hate it. Murray might be making holes in his wall right now, but this is the absolute best for the team, especially with a new arena opening in 3 years-ish

If I can survive the Young Guns era, I am definitely fine with another rebuild.

You are better person that me. I have been debating giving up my seats of 21 years. Just too expensive now and the entertainment value isn't there to me any more. Add a few truly losing seasons I think I will be out. My 10k is better spent on other things.

Is it super-weird for a club to have SEVEN pending UFAs in one year? That seems really high to me.

Trading that 1st to dump Monahan looks pretty dumb now (not like it didn't before).

I mean I've been pretty tuned out on the team since the end of 2017 or so. I don't think a rebuild will change that much. Heck, depending on how it goes it may rekindle my interest. Only time will tell.

Conroy's able to put his own stamp on the team immediately, and that's exciting no matter which way you slice it

No, not really. Nashville and St. Louis both also have 7. Many teams have six, including the President's Trophy champion and the 2 teams who just played for the Stanley Cup.
Keep in mind these are contracts that can't be extended until next Saturday and don't expire for a year, so they will often get signed before they expire (that's why it's foolhardy to look at a UFA class more than a year out).
Also, the Flames don't have any key contracts expiring this year, so it makes sense they have more expiring next year.

Feel bad for Conny. He needs a love letter from us all to make him feel better.

I'm personally so so.so tired of the bubblegum and toothpick fixes that have barely kept this team stuck together for so long .
Tear it down, stop bringing in reclamation projects, PTOs , and feel good stories.
Let's graduate guys from the Wranglers, let them make mistakes, let them learn about themselves, lose together until your so sick of losing that at least the effort makes up for the shortcomings .
I want guys who want to be here regardless of the situation. Guys that are leaders, have a good strong mind , have some Grit....and have a high GAF meter reading .

Bet the owners will be excited about that scenario. No ticket sales. Perfect.
