I will support a rebuild by continuing with my season tickets for the 21st consecutive year. Let’s build towards the new building!

Even though they’d probably loose more than they’d win, I would much rather watch exciting young up and comers, with a few grizzled vets compete and have fun every night, for the next 3 years, than whatever I saw last year…

If you have 3 darts to throw in this first round, there's a really good chance you come out with an elite talent or two that you can build around.
There's enough appetite for guys like hanifin and lindholm around the league that you could make that happen now

Last year was awful.
Low effort/GAF hockey is the absolute worst.
I was frankly jealous of Buffalo when they came through in october and dismantled us, even with the rawness of their players and inexperience.

Looking back at the first year of the last rebuild (2013-2014), the only painful part was the trade deadline… mainly because Burke didn’t get anything for Cammalleri. Outside of that… the flames established themselves as the “hardest working team in hockey” that year. Which is all we as fans wanted. That was the year of the opening face-off brawl with Vancouver! One of the most entertaining games of that decade!
I know things may be different for the casual fans, but most of us hard core fans will go to just ass many games if not more during the rebuild.

Rebuilding is exciting. The hope of becoming a top 5 team keeps you coming back for more.
And aged, tired, mediocre and high priced team chasing 8th every year (and falling short) is not exciting at all.
Burn it to the ground. I will literally go to more games if they were rebuilding compared to trotting out this sorry bunch again.

Apparently a good year as well. At least looking above average.

I'm in.
Get as many picks and prospects as you can for the magic seven. Let them play with Pelletier, Coronato, Wolf, Zary, etc.

Thanks for making this thread, Trentcrimmindependent.
Management's attempt at staying relevant last off season was a nice try, but this group of players proved that they're just not quite up to snuff.
They're not any better than Winnipeg, and both teams seem to be in a similar place, though I'm not sure how good their prospect look is. Ours certainly isn't very good, the team is getting old and they don't look like they're going to improve.
It's time to get some exciting young players on the team. The guys who don't want to be here should be traded.
I really hope this draft we end up with another 1 round pick or 2.

Nothing worse than being a team stuck in the 7th-11th slot in the conference. Well maybe one thing worse, when you are there and team mgmt keeps trotting the same roster foundation for multiple years with minor tweaks hoping that they will keep doing the same thing and get a different result somehow.
With a new coach I'm OK with them balancing the approach and bringing in a few veteran players along with futures, but I agree that it would be foolish and a big missed opportunity to solely trade for established players. The group here isn't good enough in it's current shape to win a cup, and I think leadership would be deluded to think otherwise

How many of the guys supporting a rebuild have season tickets for next season?
If you don't, will any of you pay face value to go to a game against Arizona next season?
I'm for a rebuild, but I know I won't be paying to go to a game to watch the team get blown out. The library atmosphere and the aging building don't help matters.

Rebuilds are dead. They don't work in the modern game. Flames need a rethink, not a rebuild.
Out:
- Signing UFAs, at all. Unless they're ELCs.
- Keeping talent that isn't generational beyond their good by date (eligible for unrestricted free agency).
- Being a buyer at the trade deadline, ever.
- Having a middle of the road scouting and development team (losing Lov here hurts).
- Making low risk / low reward picks.
- No more cap bloat. No more top heavy rosters.
In:
- Always be a seller at the trade deadline, even for core players. Only accept futures in return.
- Only sign generational talent to long term deals, bridges for everyone else.
- High risk, high reward picks. Take the projects and have the best development team in the league to polish those rocks into gems.
- Enter every draft with two or more first and second round picks. Load up on later round picks for moonshots.
- Build the best scouting and development team in the league, compensate them accordingly.
- Use excess cap space for futures.
- Your NHL roster's average age should be around 23.5 years old.
You're no longer building a Cup contender. Small market teams don't have this luxury.
You're now building a team of up and coming talent that is capable of squeaking into the playoffs consistently 3 of every 5 seasons if your scouts and development team execute.

One of the reasons why I was in favour of Sutter being hired was either the team was going to take the next step after all sorts of failures with the group that was, or it was going to fall apart and we would have to get new people in.
It is the latter and I'm all the happier for it. This team needs a new era. The last one was a huge disappointment. There are now no expectations on any of the players, just go do what you can do.
The Flames I feel are built similarly to the Dallas Stars as they went through their rebuild. They had two slightly older guys in Benn and Seguin (Kadri and Huberdeau) that helped the younger guys while still being valuable contributors. They already have a lot of good parts upcoming, and will get a bunch more after the trades.

The thing is that the Flames easily could take on bad expiring contracts also to facilitate and on top of that all the guys that are soon to be UFA are cheap relative to performance.
So basically the team could end up getting upwards of 10+ good assets + whatever meh contracts that could then hypothetically get flipped at the deadline also.

If you went full Tampa Bay Rays on this, the Flames could walk away with one of the best prospect pools, and a good core of defense and goaltending for some short term pain up front.
Realistically because nothing would be standing in the way of the young guys, the Flames could have their rebuild done in literally two seasons.

Best news flames management has heard in a long time..they obviously know that given the circumstances, they have to rebuild...I think the hesitation was more so, direction from ownership, these latest events will force ownership to pivot
