This is probably close to market value though.

If Flames hadn't moved him and he was coming off the exact same 2 injury plagued seasons I think he would have re-signed for a similar deal.

Oh, I totally forgot! I've been having conversations with an organization called Big Brothers Big Sisters of Toronto and I was looking at one of their flyers a few weeks ago and who do I see on their flyer with a Little? Sean Monahan.

Most important element for Monahan is to make sure he's being open and honest with himself and his training staff from an injury perspective . He appears to have had a lot of overcompensating injuries with hips, groin. If something doesn't feel right than it isn't.

Maybe he downplays injuries to the team but I know a lot of people were upset with his broken foot and his Calgary game. Lead to more injuries and than it didn't heal properly which prevented Montreal from trading him at the deadline.

Some players can be banged up, still be productive and play a lot of games, that isn't Monny. He needs to be smarter and better than other's in order to stay in the league.

Wish him nothing but the best and I always loved his time in Calgary

I just think at that money he would have a few options and probably wouldn't have chosen Calgary

I really wish that the flames had waited until after the Lucic's bonus and traded a $1M Lucic + a 1st for nothing to keep Monahan. you have to believe it was possible. This contract that would sure look good on a Flames 4th line that is looking to play 2 young players next season.

Oh well, Monahan is one Jersey flames fans can continue to wear proudly at the dome.

Lucic had a NMC. He waived for expansion knowing he 99% wouldn't be taken. But I doubt he'd have moved to the Habs just for kicks.

I think they should have just LTIRed Monahan. I mean, he played only 25 games - don't tell me anyone qould have questioned it.

That's pretty fair, apparently you have to force some players on the LTIR until the playoffs to win the cup now. Or at least that's the lesson I've taken form the past 3 seasons

I was really hoping he'd land elsewhere and in a place like Colorado for this price. Best of luck to him and hopefully he can get his career back on track. It's disappointing to see such a talented player fall off due to injuries.
In hindsight knowing what we know, it seems like the Flames would have been better off to have never made this trade, and then not signed Kadri. But hey, that's why they play the games I guess. For all we know, Kadri wins playoff MVP next year when Flames hoist the cup. I don't like the chances of that happening though.

I don’t understand why they didn’t LTIR him either. Take a year to heal properly then come back and give yourself a good chance to prove yourself again, and save a first round pick at the same time

Monahan was saying he felt better than he had in years last summer...pretty tough to LTIR him from the start

Good deal. Hopefully he can stay healthy and get traded to a contender at the deadline, assuming Montreal is out of it.

If we put him on LTIR I bet the league would have investigated us to the fullest extent and fined us and took away picks, while teams like the Oilers can LTIR Mike Smith and pay Duncan Keith under the table for a fake position to force him to retire.

Well there was rumors that the Flames were talking to a team or two about him the Bruins were interested. The rumor went away when the team was said to have not been able to clear cap space to make adding Lucic work.... or was that at the TDL?

No that was last off-season where there was a bunch of smoke about that, and then it just never happened. And I think there was another team rumored to be interested as well.
People forget Lucic also had a NTC he could use.

I'd argue his 17 points in 26 games is closer to what he can do when his health is monitored than looking at his counting his Calgary games which arguably include a bunch of games where he shouldn't have played.

That’s kind of the point though isn’t it? He had a summer dedicated to recovery and could still only play 25 games. That’s just part of the package with him unfortunately.

Almost unbelievable that despite all his injuries, Monahan has played the 5th most NHL games of the 2013 draft class.

Well TBF he did play through the injuries and got his surgery in the offseason for the first few that started to pile up.

Remember Shaq with the Lakers who injured his toe and got the surgery when the season started because he was going to use company time to recover.
