What an awful deal that has managed to get worse and worse. This is the worst trade in the post cap era and will impact the Canucks for a decade. Winning teams don't have dead cap space due to buyouts. The Canucks seem to always be either paying to much for mediocre free agents or buying out those players.

Benning took a bad team and continued to make it worse. Only interested in saving his own job and sacrificed the clubs future.

Sign him and play him with Tanev then trade both at the deadline.

John Chayka signed OEL to that deal

Jim Benning traded for him.

OTOH Bill Armstrong comes out of this smelling like roses.

It's also funny considering VAN's LHD depth:

Hughes
Dermott (injury prone)

...and some randos with little to no NHL experience.

He will go on a decent contract to LA, FLA, TB, CAR, NY, VEG, DAL..those type of contending/warm weather teams. And he will do well.

Remember the noise here when OEL was available and so many were saying we should do whatever it took to get him? Good times.

If we move Hanifin, I wouldn’t be shocked to see him land here on a cheap 1 year deal due to the Maloney connection. The old hope for the best reclamation project.

And all they had to do was suffer through one more year of Beagle, Roussel and Erickson and they would have been out of jail.

Turned it into a longer sentence, that keeps getting longer.

Was a head scratcher that day, and this was somewhat predictable.

If trades/signings are widely panned by the fans, the fans end up being right around 90% of the time. Likewise, if moves are widely praised by fans (like the Hamilton trade), the fans are still usually correct.

Yet for some reason, the personalities in the media always give GMs the benefit of the doubt, while also acting like fans are clueless.

It's clear that a lot of GMs make stupid moves. I think Mr. Benning is a clear example of that.

Most trades fall into that band of acceptable. You may not agree with it, but you can see the assumptions being made to have it all hold together.

This trade though ... head scratcher from the drop.

Just an insane move.

If you didn't dig into the bubble results of the Canucks and assumed they were a phoenix rising I guess you move the cap hits so you can go for it. But if you look at the heater the Canucks had in net through two goaltenders? Way premature.

I just can't believe how bad a GM Benning was. I used to think Chiarelli was maybe the worst in recent history but Benning is maybe worse. It's great that these two worked for Flames rivals but it goes to show just how bad some of the GM's are in this league. This trade looked terrible the day it was announced and here we are today with the Canucks paying a steep price to rid themselves of a player that they shouldn't have taken on in the first place. Too many bad GM's have sewered teams in this league.

Minority but there were lots of CPers who thought this was a good deal for Vancouver

There was a small handful that were in love with Garland. He wasn't a good enough return to offset the terrible OEL contract.

Considering OEL went from a 5% cohort to 28...he did rebound with the change of scenery. Just that he had fallen off so badly to begin with.

Hopefully the Canucks can find a way to sign right now help that they end up buying out 4 years from now to keep this gift on giving.

Better chance OEL gets Tanev badly injured trying to cover him and the Flames are paying someone to take him off the roster by the deadline...even if they're dead last in the standings.
