I certainly would welcome a move towards acquiring young talent/draft picks for the Flames. If they do go in this direction, I suspect it will be as a result of having their hands forced.
He became an owner in 1994 as per the Flames website:

In fact, Harley Hotchkiss had died and Murray was fully in command of the ownership group by then (he actually took the reins well before HH died of course).

I recall when the Tkachuk thing happened and people were talking about American players not wanting to live in Canada, someone in the media (I can't recall who exactly) used Hanifin as a counter point saying that he loves playing in Calgary and is really happy there.

The debacle of last season may have changed that, but if he is still on the fence and there is a chance to re-sign him long term at market value, I think that would be preferable. I have to wonder where the cap space is going to come from though, especially if Lindholm gets extended.

There are some great ideas in this thread that could allow us to re-tool on the fly and maximize assets.

Some of my highlights:
-Trade Hanifin for top picks (this draft) and prospects
-Trade Hanifin to Pittsburg for 23 1st, 24 1st, 2nds and Granlund (cap dump)
-Trade Hanifin to Buffalo for 23 1st and Kulich
-Trade Hanifin to Detrot for 23 1st, and 2x 2nds
-See if there is an opportunity to trade Kadri back to COL (retain $1M) for a 1st and Newhook
-Trade Toffoli & Vladar for picks and prospects
-Be willing to retain on all trades and take short-term cap dumps
-Re-sign Lindholm, Kylington to long term deals
-Re-sign Backlund and Tanev to short term deals
-Re-sign Zadorov to mid-term deal

Go next year with:
Huberdeau - Lindholm - Pelletier
Mangiapane - Backlund - Coronato
Coleman - Ruzicka - Dube
??? - Granlund/Cap Dump - Duehr
Phillips

Weegar - Anderson
Kylington - Tanev
Zadorov - Stetcher
Stone

Markstrom - Wolf

Add a bunch of picks and prospects in the wings and still compete for the playoffs.

just nitpicking as you didn't include Kadri or Newhook in the above line-up.

From LeBrun:

Quote:
• All signs point to defenseman Noah Hanifin not wanting to extend with the Flames, so that situation is likely headed for a trade. He’s got one year left on his deal at a $4.95 million AAV. Obviously, new Flames GM Craig Conroy is juggling a lot with Elias Lindholm, Mikael Backlund and Tyler Toffoli among other players entering the last year of their deals and the Flames needing answers. Calgary, like Winnipeg, is an action team right now and can impact things around the league in many ways. The question is whether Conroy will be able to convince enough of these guys to extend and stay on board. His optimistic and positive demeanor is his greatest asset as a first-time GM.

“He’s the Ted Lasso of NHL GMs,” one agent said of Conroy’s likable personality.

I say just keep riding the good vibes from Maloney, Connie, Huska and Iggy coming in and only extend players who want to take good value contracts. Don’t burden the team with big deals that will age poorly. Keep riding the positive waves!

I have no problem with the Flames trading everyone acquiring lots of picks for this draft and trying again.

Hanafin is "fine" in the same way Brodie was "fine" I feel. I won't be too upset when he is gone the same way I wasn't when Brodie is gone. Hopefully the Flames get a haul and Kylington can come back strong but that seems like a major question mark for me.

Yeah, so long as Connie is proactive - I see no negativity this summer.

Can’t come to terms with Lindy? Get a haul!
Can’t come to terms with Noah? Get a haul!
Can’t come to terms with Tyler? Get a good return!
Can’t come to terms with Mikael? Get a good return!

Nothing but positive outcomes

…so long as we don’t trade for a bunch of 38 year olds who only have one knee or something.

I have no problem with this either, but I also think that there is a path forward to success without a massive overhaul of the roster. In any event, I am eager to see how Conroy parlays Hanifin in a trade.

I think we can all agree that this is the most important piece of reporting in this news, yes?

I think the upcoming UFA issue is kind of perfect (based on rumours). There’s little risk of hard choices going wrong. Sign the guys (and pay the good ones like Lindholm) that want to stay long term, and ship the ones who don’t or who may not be worth the coin (guys like Toffoli and Backlund need to come in cheaper).

It’s a good mix of stability and assets that will allow Conroy to keep the team competitive while starting to shape it to his vision.

So now that Lebrun has confirmed the news, can we all stop crapping on insiders, suggesting they're lying, when they report something we don't want to hear?

Didn't someone cry about Friedman making up his own news when he said he'd heard that Hanifin wanted out?

Sometimes they're right, sometimes they're wrong. Take a wait and see approach.

I like the idea of moving Hanifin for a cost-controlled mid-six centre as part of a package, and then moving Backlund for picks and prospects.

Yeah the attitude towards NHL insiders, and CP insiders, is petty and outright stupid.

“He’s not an insider! He’s anti-Flames! He said something that didn’t come perfectly to fruition” just a whack of bad takes.

Even if insiders are wrong, it’s something to discuss.

I especially like the posters who have sources. It just makes for something fun to talk about/read.
