The Avs have been shopping Girard for a while now. They need to move cap, they don’t like what they’ve seen from Girard in the playoffs, and they see Byram as a cheaper replacement.

Usually fan bases overshoot player value but I see the opposite here. Tons of teams could use this guy and tons of teams can fit him in this year. All the ingredients for a bidding war.

I think he’s gone for sure though. Big hole to fill for sure.
Really hoping the Flames get a 25 year oldish legit top line winger for Hanifin. Would much prefer that over borderline top 6 guy plus late 1st type of deal.

Personally I wouldn't touch Byram with a 10 foot pole. Super talented but super fragile.

Backlund seems a more likely target for the Avs than Lindholm. Hard to see how a Lindholm extended at 8+ million fits into their cap structure going forward. Backlund as a rental for one season while Landeskog is off the books is a much better fit.

Kylington comes back - problem solved. Yeah, I hope Flames can get something for Tanev thru a trade soon.

Sure, but Hanifin would save them $50k for 1 year, and then cost a whole bunch more.

I don't think Kylington will replace Hanifin. Flames d looks mighty thin without Hanifin.

High Risk High Reward

But that injury history terrifies me when he's the key piece in a return.

Girard sucks, so there is that. An offensive dman who cannot really play defence and scores fewer points than Hanifin. Big pass on that trade.

It really doesn't.

Weegar - Andersson
Tanev - Kylington
Zadorov - Stecher

Any of Zadorov, Stecher, and Kylington can play that #4/5 role.

Kylington may not replace Hanifin, but Kylington, Stecher, and internal growth from Weegar, Andersson, and Zadorov do. If you retain Hanifin, you've got to move someone out or bury a solid d-man in a #6-7 position, which is horrible cap management.

Then do next year. Tanev, Zadarov, and Kylington could all be gone and Hanifin is the one I'd personally bet on if he is open to signing a long-term contract. I am not that high on Kylington though.

That's when he doesn't stand out and the Flames are a defensive tire fire with him in the lineup! Jeez, that sound like the Flames last season and the season before before when they couldn't even make the playoffs.

LOL, that would've seem like a crazy decision to make 2 years ago but that would've been the best thing Tre could've done now that you look back on it. The Flames would've had Gio and defensive depth going into the playoffs 2 seasons ago and still have their 2015 1st round pick! Then, traded Gio to Leafs or some other team last season for something at least. That Monahan trade is an everlasting bad taste just to free up cap space.

"There is a feeling out there that Hanifin is going to be available"

Friedman, just now on 960. Noted that his name was around at the combine, and that there is demand (from other teams).

Who was spreading his name at the combine? Conroy said today that he skipped the combine, so it couldn't have been him.

I'd rather sign him, but if he doesn't want to and/or if you can start a bidding war, it's just fine with me.

Hopefully the return is solid.

Having Kylington in the Top 4 is questionable enough before he took a year off. I would love to be pleasantly surprised but can't see this team having a ton of success with him in the Top 4 to start the season.

This is almost Friedman creating his own news. Says people are interested, which morphs into "Hanifin is available".

Having Kylington in the top 4 in 21/22 was not questionable at all. Give the guy credit, he was fantastic.

I feel like there's a weird judgement of defencemen by some fans sometimes. I feel like there's an expectation that if you aren't Robyn Regehr, you're bad defensively and can't be played.

Brodie was slammed.

Weegar was slammed.

Kylington doesn't get the credit he deserves.

Something about Friedman just annoys me.

I can't tell you what it is, but yup, annoying.
