Vegas has Logan Thompson for another two years at $766K which is awesome, but Hill is a UFA who they probably will be under huge pressure to re-sign. I wonder if they trade Thompson for a bunch of assets, and then need a backup. They also have Stephenson as a pending UFA next year. I'd love to grab him somehow.

You gauge interest in signing before you make that deal. No point giving up anything if he isn’t willing to sign

Vladar was 35th and 45th in save percentage in two seasons with the Flames. That doesn’t scream “stellar” and “mediocre” as one poster suggests.
I will concede that one stat doesn’t tell the whole story, I just don’t expect there will be many clubs who don’t already feel they have a Vladar level backup in their organization already. The 2nd for Berra trade was a unicorn IMO. I see his value closer to a Brossoit who has been available on waivers plenty the last few years.
If you get a second or third for him, that’s worth it. Otherwise keep him around and if Wolf wins the backup job, send Vladar down.

As backups go it is pretty good actually. And it's all contextual - his first season are you saying he was a poor backup?

Cool, here it is, the guarantee that Dubois will sign somewhere other than Montreal.

Hanifin is better than Romanov, but is he Middlestadt + Lindgren + conditional 1st better? And do the Sabres even want to bringing in a guy who’s going to get 1st pairing money for 7 more years when they’ll soon have two other defencemen making big dollars?

You might be right… that might be asking too much for Hanifin. Maybe just Mittelstadt and the 13th overall? Even an unsigned Hanifin could return a first round pick in 2024 for the Sabres if they still don’t take another step this year.

In this draft only, if you can get the 13th pick for Hanifin, you run with it.

The person who made that comment said it in the context of a backup. 35th in save percentage is theoretically the 3rd best backup.

Yeah, I said it, and it was more based on recollection than anything else. I'd acknoweldge that save % for backups is a funny animal which reflects that role. Some backups have high save percentages based on limited starts, being called in late in games and quality of opponent.

You’re probably right. This draft is supposedly very good so a 13th overall pick in this draft is likely close to the equivalent of a top 10 pick in other drafts.

You don’t see any room between “stellar” and “poor”?

Not only are teams willing to trade their first round pick, we're actually in line to historically pick up the 3rd overall from Columbus, according to CP! We're just discussing how we can't add too much after Lindholm or else Columbus can pound sand!!

Yep, some teams give back ups easy starts to try to get wins out of "back up" games, other teams use the "throw him at a top team on a back to back so we can get the win with our starter vs the weaker team and if the back up wins too, bonus" strategy.

Good teams use their back up against poor teams and try to win every game.
Bad teams use their best goalie vs. Bad teams to take wins while they can.

Sure, and my point was that every back up goalie's stats aren't the same for that reason.

I would love to see if Conroy can squeeze Liljegren out of the Leafs. Tre has undervalued guys like Valimaki and Kylington and Kulak historically, and Liljegren's talent is well worth exploring. Better skater than any of our right defensemen, would be a perfect partner for Zadorov with upside.

With Vegas' ongoing cap issues, it seems likely they keep Thompson, if only because he's capable and dirt-cheap.

I didn’t realize that Nylander is repped by Lewis Gross. That’s not insignificant.
Tre has never said much about the Gaudreau negotiation but I remember this from Burke from 2018..
Quote:
“I can only tell you, this agent [who’s representing Nylander] represented Johnny Gaudreau, made some demands which we’ve never really made public when I worked for the Flames, because we thought people would resent them,” Burke said Saturday in a discussion with David Amber and Nick Kypreos.
|
I could see if nylander doesn’t say yep right away, he’s gone.
