I think Treliving who is well connected, had an eye to this last offseason, finding out that Dubas could be out the door this offseason, and also knowing he'd be in line for the job.
At that time too, he knew that probably only in a perfect season scenario does both he and Sutter stay after this year. When things didn't go as planned as the season wore on, on the ice and just as much off, I think Treliving knew that the Leafs job is a once in a career opportunitity and became tough to pass up that possibility considering the hurdles here.
I think some of the players that he was friendly with knew that too, certainly before the end of the season, that BT was going to be moving on, which made them reevaluate things because he was their reason for being happy here.
Even if Sutter got tossed first, I don't think it means Treliving stays either...it's been framed that way but it was an easier out for BT. The Leafs GM job is the most prestigious it could be said in hockey.
I expect a lot of "process" chatter tomorrow. He deals well with the media in general but can get pretty defensive too...we will see how long that lasts with all the reporters and other out there looking for hot takes each day...again this was media market that called Leafs goaltenders parents to get injury updates on their son.

Gaudreau said he wanted to stay as well. He also said he wanted to stay the offseason prior.
There isn’t much said publicly in sports that shouldn’t be taken with a grain of salt. That’s why when the media here’s about Shanahan calling the core four to tell them they aren’t getting traded, you might not want to take that as gospel.
Pretty sure Huberdeau didn’t think he was getting traded. Things change.

I think Brad saw a sinking ship and bailed. He tried a hail Mary that didn't work and now the team is screwed.

If Vladar is made available his contract is very affordable for most teams, I expect many would take a run at him.
Ottawa is a Darkhorse partner here.

Seems like a great teammate but struggled just as much as Markstrom last year when he had the chance to seize the starters spot....he got beaten high far far too often for a 6'4+ goalie.
I wouldn't trust him and Wolf to lead the way even if you could move Markstrom (not that we should), and Wolf isn't going anywhere, so...
Conroy dealing from a position of strength here, Vladar is a decent backup, if he gets an adjustment on his mechanics and positioning from last year.

IDK, Markstom's cap space could be useful and if things go off the rails there are other guys out there
I mean, its not hard to replace .800s goal tending

I wouldn't have less faith in Vladar/Wolf than I would Markstrom/Wolf. There was not real consequential difference between Markstrom and Vladar last season and Vladar is young and is likely still on the upswing, not to mention, $3+ million cheaper.
For all those saying that goalies are voodoo and all that, the same thing applies to Vladar. He is from the same class as other goalies like Hill, Vejmelka, and Montembeault (all 3 drafted in succession) and could be the next one to take a big step forward if given more rope.
There is no guarantee that Markstrom bounces back. But look at Bobrovsky, right? Sure, but there are numerous examples of goalies that actually do fall off the map and never rebound. It's probably more common for 30+ year old goalies who fall off the map to disappear into obscurity than it is for them to suddenly lead a team to the Stanley Cup finals.
Having said all that, I recognize that trading Vladar is way easier than trading Markstrom, which would be nearly impossible. Just saying, I think trading Vladar is more likely to look bad in the future compared to trading Markstrom. Just because the occasional goalie comes back from the dead, doesn't mean they all do.

I hope he is not, for the record
I think that would not be an optimal decision

There's a big difference between a player telling the media he wants to stay, and a team president personally calling players to tell them they're not being moved (if true).

My thoughts... Tre was good at trades, good at RFA deals, bad at coaching hires, bad at signing UFAs, good at building relationships with everyone, good with the media, a good human being
My predictions... Will win the vast majority of his trades (watch out, Connie, Tre likes to get former players!), will be more successful at the stuff he was bad at in Calgary because Toronto is a much more desired location to be in and he'll have options (players and coaches) that he never had in Calgary, will bring Toronto at least one Stanley Cup

I think Friedman was pretty clear that Shanahan didn’t call to say they weren’t getting traded but that he believes in them but would let the new GM decide personnel decisions. We know the corporate environment where the GM does what the president says, so I’m skeptical that any of the four (or count Reilly in there making it 5), gets dealt. I think what that really all means is they will only get dealt if a compelling deal come through. And that’s specifically Nylander.

The secret with Treliving is getting him to overpay through media hype. If Conroy wants to deal anyone, create a media frenzy and Treliving will call offering the wealth of picks. Flavours of the month he wants in. The difference in this case is Shanahan seems to have a strong sense of not making moves that mess with long term sustainability so it’ll probably keep Treliving in check.

Treliving was good at making splashy trades in the off season, but terrible at making trades at any other time. His trades rarely moved the needle and made significant improvements to the team. He had a propensity to throw away picks at the deadline for depth players that never amounted to anything or moved the needle. The biggest problem with Treliving's dealings was his inability to swing a deal that amounted to a difference maker.
Treliving was not good at managing the overall organization. It appeared he never had a concrete plan and would change directions willy nilly. He bleed picks and didn't manage the cap well. I agree he built good relationships, but those relationships got in the way of him making the hard decision. Too many times players made decisions for him. The decisions that mattered the most he always seems to make mistakes. He won't be missed.
My prediction for him in Toronto is going to be a performance similar to that in Calgary. He'll make deals that people will get excited about, but in the long run they won't amount to anything because they don't really make a difference. He'll blow draft capital and bleed assets which will slowly erode the team from the inside out. He won't pick the right coach for the team and they won't get over the hump. His teams will be up and down but never achieve anything. His only saving grace is the deep pockets of the ownership so he might be able to spend his way out of mistakes. His biggest problem will be the media and the fan pressure. Treliving was a middling performer in Calgary and will be even more middling in the Center of the Universe with the immense pressure that comes with that job.
