Not talking about Smith, she’s 1 voice of many voices that have been elected today. I’m excited about literally any new voice that has been elected regardless of party affiliation.

You do realize that opposition views in the province make good democracy. Sure, the party we wanted to win didn’t but people can continue to fight for their cause and stand up to their government. A strong opposition holds politicians accountable and provides good governance. Is it shocking that people love this city and province but don’t align with the ruling party?
From your comments I assume you’re a conservative supporter. Would it then not be ignorant to ask you to leave Canada since I’m sure you have a strong dislike for our current Prime Minister.

Anyone else remember back when just before Christmas Ralph Klein drunkenly stumbled into a homeless shelter and threw a pocketful of change on the ground while insulting people and telling them all to get jobs, while he was in office as Premier?
Alberta has always loved the rogues and had a space in its heart for the Trumpy types.
This result is not surprising.

They didn't comment specifically on this province, they commented on the pervasive toxicity of neo-politica.

No his points were refuted and he couldn’t back them up, likely because he knew there was no supporting then and was trying to find a way to justify supporting the UCP.

Crazy (and unfortunate) to see that the other parties seemed to have had their support absolutely ravaged by this “two party system” in Alberta.
|
Most of the other parties run to the right of even the UCP, though. Smith managed to recapture that side of the vote with a lot of dog whistles though.
Notley said she’s not going anywhere and I’m good with that, because she’s a competent public servant. We’ll see if she hangs on until the next election though.
Smith is just going to be emboldened. All that spin by candidates and proxies of getting rid of her was just an attempt to save votes. There’s a reason a lot of the educated and more traditional conservatives like Schweitzer and Aheer took off. They couldn’t work with her and couldn’t get rid of her.

|
OK, but if the argument is they're too attached to the Federal NDP to exist independently, then all the smears about Jagmeet running the show are arguably true.
If they had a new party with a new name, ran under purple colors for being in the centre (and for Nenshi voters!) I think they'd have won. I've been saying it for years, but they needed every vote they could get to win this even with Danielle "own goal" Smith. Turning away the votes from the people who wouldn't ever vote NDP for historical reasons was foolish.
And frankly, concerns about losing their far-left base were also foolish. That's a small group in AB anyway, and realistically those people are very likely going to vote for you anyway. In a two horse race they'll mostly pick the closer party to them.
A couple of years would have given them time to organize, fundraise, and distance themselves from the federal NDP. They don't have to do that if they don't want to, but I don't think they'll ever win again in Alberta if they don't.

Politicians need to learn when to walk away, Notley needs to go, nobody should have lost to Smith. It couldn't have gotten any easier for Notley. As much as some people like her, she is not good at this game.

Because I'm not an extremist, to be blunt quite a few in this thread come across as one. I strongly dislike our federal government but always hope for the best. If I thought they were doing a great job I'd vote for them.
And I believe Alberta and Canada is strong and resilient.
