Not true.

It was first Andrew Mangiapane then circled back to see about Tyler Toffoli. Jarvis was never offered or discussed.

That is not how trades work though, teams don't give up value for a UFA based on re-signing him.

Feel free to ignore me, no loss on my part, but just because you are creating a scenario that doesn't happen means I have to live in fantasy land. I will discuss trade issues based on how the NHL actually works.

The Horvat trade has been shown to be a similar kind of trade, it didn't come close to the 3rd overall value. UFA's are traded all the time never once has any return been close to a 3rd overall pick.

Why would you want another 30 yrs old for 7-8 more years?

2 are not enough?

Yup there are risks. But at #3, the risk/reward is damn good

Mathematically they can yes, but would take trading away guys who are making the 4-5.5M dollar range.

But realistically this team if it wants to compete in the next decade simply cannot afford to lock up 6 guys over 7 years all over the age of 30 basically. We’d be the next post cup ERA Blackhawks without 2 cup winning superstars.

What a disaster that would be.

So while you’re not technically wrong, it would be absolutely crippling to the franchise.

Of all the 30 year olds in the league if you were told you could sign one to a 7-8 year contract, Lindholm would easily be in the top 10 for most appealing/least painful in the outlook.

If only we didn't sign two other contracts shortly prior to it for much less appealing aging players.

I wouldn't roll the dice unless you can unload one of those other two. In other words, Kadri. Huby's contract is too long and too rich.

It's one of those upper echelon drafts too. 2003-esque. So chances are you're looking at the Sedins, Toews, Draisaitls, Huberdeaus of the third overall pool.

I'll take your word for it. It was reported by Russo and Duhatchek, and repeated by Friedman, but they all could have had the same wrong source.

https://flamesnation.ca/news/friedma...trade-deadline

Quote:
The Athletic’s Michael Russo confirmed what had been suspected: that Carolina made an inquiry to Calgary about Elias Lindholm.
https://www.nhltraderumors.me/2023/0...-deadline.html

Quote:
According to Michael Russo and Eric Duhatschek, the Hurricanes tried hard to re-acquire Lindholm at the 2023 trade deadline. This would have firmly stuck him in the second line center role and shored that up for this season and next at a $4.85 million AAV cap hit.

Umm. Friedman said to expect $8.5 x 8. After 3 years no chance it ages well.

So trading Backlund and Tanev would absolutely cripple the franchise? I disagree.

Lmao, yes that never happens...except the team literally did this with Tkachuk. Yup, you sure know how the NHL works, so much so you can't even remember what this team did a year ago!

Like Bergeron right? Boston surely regrets hanging onto him that long.

Lindholm is 28. Go look at up SC champs, it is littered with teams that had their key players signed to 7-8 year deals in their late 20's.

LOL

No that isn't what happened with Tkachuk. Take a look at the age and contract differences between him and Lindholm that make the deals totally different.

Bergeron has always been a better player. And just because it worded out for him doesn’t mean it’ll work out for everyone akin to him. One could argue he’s an exception but you’re making him to be the norm.

That is what happened with Tkachuk, age has nothing to do with it. You can admit your wrong you know?

Or Malkin? Or Giroux? Or Joe Pavelski? Or Zuccarello? Or Kopitar? Sure are plenty of exceptions...

Spends on your definition now. Malkin two way player? How many of those are $8.5M worth no matter how you classify them? I’d say none.

I am pointing out those guys are still productive at mid 30's. Even at 36 Lindholm will still be a very valuable player. Also by that time $8.5M won't even be that big of a salary. You don't think Kopitar is worth that, a similar player to Lindholm? Btw, he makes more than 8.5

There are thoughts we may be nearing the peak of tv deals. That’s another topic but I think ultimately we agree to disagree. The team needs flexibility given the locking in if Huberdeau and Kadri among others. Adding another makes no sense though Lindholm is better than Kadri.
